Shipowners have this season (eays an exchange) had fewer coaling contractors oailing upon , them in respect to foreign coaling arrangements.. The reason is not far to seek.- There arc relatively few {(reign ports where coaling contracts in the usual form can be proposed. An illustration of the position is found in the. following extract from a coaling contractor's circular just issued:— "The unprecedented conditions existing at the present time render it impossible for ufi to follow our usual procedure, or to submit anything like' a complete list of quotations for yearly contracts over 1515. At depots which supply British coals we are only able to quote for limited periods, according, to circumstances. On receipt of particulars of approximate. ' dates of requirements at such stations we shall be. pleased to quote as far as may be prcc' ticable." • Apparently the only safe thing for owners to do is to bunker for the round voyage wherever possible. MAKUEA'S PASSENGEBB, Arriving at Auckland for Vancouver, via Honolulu and Suva, late on Monday night, the Union Company's E.M.S. Aocording to the "Sydney Shipping List" the Union Company has received confirmation of the report that the steamer Marama grounded slightly when making San Francisco harbour recently. Several platea and frames in the bottom, were buckled, and repairs are being carried out at Ban Francisco. These will occupy about a fortnight, and the Marama is expected to leave for Sydney direofc on January 25. wiher© she is due on March 15. The vessel's mails will be forwarded from Vancouver by tho E.M.S. Niagara, leaving on February 17. Tho mishap is believed to be due to tho temporary substitution of a. white Jignt for a Ted. This will mean that the Marama will not call at Papeete, Earotonga, and Wellington this trip. CANADIAN WHEAT SHIPMENTS. s Laden with wheat from St. John (Canada) the chartered steamer Hesperos is expected , to arrive off, Tiritan (Auckland! about February 19. An exchange states that the berthing of t-he Rakonoa (2245 tons) at Qlsborne last week marked another epoch in the history of the development of the .inner harbour. This is the largest vessel to have eiitered the river, and the event is all 1 the more gratifying from the fact that tho Bakanoa oame up the channel an hour and a half before high tide. The steamer was piloted up_ the river by the harbourmatser (Captain \ Benton), and no difficulty whatever was experienced. Despite her length the Rakanoa, which was drawing 15ft., swung round with perfect-ease- Oaptain G. Buxton. ■ who is in command of the steamer, has not visited Gisborno since 1883. On that occasion he was in the brigantine -Endeavour, 82 tons, which called in for Kt-ores. The vessel did not attempt to go up the river, but anchored off tie entrance, while a boat was sent ashore for stores. The only wharf existing then waa a jetty, The Shanghai Dock and Engineering Company, of Shanghai, China, is building tho largest vet:sol ever constructed at its yards, a 372,0C0d01. steel collier for the United States Government, to be used in tho Philippine Islands. Its dimensions will be:—Length, 362 ft.; breadth, 50ft.; and depth, 26ft. >Her capacity will be 6000 tons, and she will be fitted with single screw auxiliary machinery, patent coal-bunker elevators, and automatic weighing machines. - As a result of cheap and comparer tively efficient labour, the company has been able to compete successfully with Japanese shipbuilding concerns in bidding for independent shipbuilding contracts throughout the Fax East.
