NOTES AND COMMENTS
I"By GlEncoi.l The attractions for sportsmen this week are the Taranaki Cup Meeting, which is to bo held on Wednesday and Thursday, and the Poverty Bay Turf Club's Meeting, which takes place on Thursday and Saturday. J. N. M'Grogor is now regularly riding work over fences at Caulfield. On the day that Di Gama won at Sandown, Wimmera, who has not been seen out much lately, was favourite for the hurdle race, in which he carried 12st. 111b. He failed to get nearer than tenth at the finish of the two miles, and it looks as if the old Merriwce gelding has lost his da-sh. Di Gama has now won six races out of his last seven starts in Victoria. The Vasco horse is one of the well-faucied division for the Australian Cup, to be run early next month. The champion sprinter Woorak is a firm favourite for the Newmarket Handicap, to be run on February 27. Amato is the next in .demand. A Sydney exchange says that J. Whitworth is to train Football in future. The reported decision of Mr. W. E. Bidwill to retire Reputation for the present season was probably influenced by the fact that tho colt has been in work sinco last May, when he was taken up with a view to racing at Randwick in the spring, and since then he has done quite a lot of raoing. The black colt was also a very late foal, and this would also assist tho owner to lie decision he did. The New Zealand-owned Silver King, who went wrong on tho eve of the big Spring Meeting'at R-andwick, is again in work under F. M'Grath at Kensington. Emperador has incurred a 101b. penalty for the Taranaki Stakes, to be run next Thursday. Tho Charlemagne II golding will probably face the starter in tho Cup on tho opening day, in which, despite his Bst. 121b., he will have a host of supporters. Mr. George Hume, of Featherston, is the new owner of Martian Princess. The filly is not to be raced, but will go to tho stud next season. Nominations for tho Nelson Jockey Club's annual meeting, to be held on March 10 and 11, close on Monday next at !) p.m. This fixture is always popular with Wellington owners, and no doubt a good number will bo represented there next month. Tho Auckland horses Royal Soult, Merry Roe, and Phosphorous were shipped from Auckland to New Plymouth yesterday. No mention is made of Bedford, so it mny bo assumed that the Tnkapimn Cup winner is not going to throw down the gauntlet to Emperador.
