£44,000 DONATED. BY THE WELLINGTON DISTRICT. The committee in Wellington of tho Poor of Great Britain aud Ireland and Belgium Fund reports that the total amount received from Wellington and the surrounding provincial districts now totals in cash the handsome sum of £30,161 14s. 2d. This represents actual cash received, aud does not include value of clothing or foodstuffs already shipped or in band, or promises of donations not yet available. If to this amount is added tho sum of £14,385 17s. 2d. which has been forwarded to the Belgian Consul in Wellington (the. Hon. C. J. Johnston, M.L.C.), tho total is brought up to £44,547 lis. 4d. for overseas relief.' The country districts and the provincial towns have been most generous in their support to the fund, and have contributed their proportion of the total. Wellington City, on the other hand, has been' somewhat'backward, and the committee are malting a further appeal for contributions from organised societies and clubs, as well as industrial and commercial associations. The fnnd is being administered as i'ar a< Wellington is concerned; practically, without expense. The committee ■ receives contributions either for British or Belgian relief, and the instructions of those making donations are carefully carried out when the allocations aro .being made. As the money accumulates it is handed to His Exceljencv'the Governor, who cables it through the Bank of New Zealand, free "of exchange to tho- High Commissioner in London, with instructions to hand the amount for- British relief to the executive of the. Prince of Wales' Fnnd for administration, and the sum for Belgian relief to the proper Belgian authorities for distribution. A further remittance (the fourth) will b'o sent Homo in a few days' timo.
