THE CITY'S FINANCES

The fluctuations in the City's finances during the year as explained to-day by the Mayor, are of less interest than the final conclusions expressed by Me. Luke. Tne credits available in connection with the various accounts disclose a total net balance of nearly £13,000, which the Mayor expects to bo materially increased by the end of the financial year in March next. The point of particular interest arising out of the situation disclosed is that various works which have been postponed for lack of funds will be now proceeded with. These undertakings include street-widening and streetimprovements of other descriptions, also preparations for tramway extensions. While it is satisfactory to note the pleasing state of the City finances and the cheerful views of the Mayor thereon, it may be just as well not to hurry on the various works and undertakings which the Corporation has in mind. It is possible that during the winter months employment may not be so plentiful as it is at the present moment, and the expenditure of the money then instead of now may prove of greater benefit to the community generally. Possibly the Mayor has not lost sight of this aspect of the situation, but there is no harm in directing his" attention to it.
