SWIMMING
, PETONE .SEASON OPENED. Tha Petons Amateur Swimming and Life-Saving Club opened its season on Saturday very Successfully. | About 700 persons witnessed the proceedings, the Mayor of Petone (Mr. J. VV. Al'iiwan), in a brief speech, declaring the season open. Mr. G. S. Hill responded on behalf of die visitors. The Municipal Band, under Conductor Eades, played seleotions throughout the ajteriioon, and the thanks of tho club are extended to the Wellington Centre, to whom, in a large measuro the success .of the afternoon was due. Prior to the sports an interesting exhibition of life saving was given by Messrs. J. H. Kober and J, Duffy, in which one of the two piunged into, deep water fully dressed, and was promptly ''rescued" by his comrade. Later,- a life-line display was shown and ' much appreciated. Mr. Jacobsen acted as hondicapper and starter, and the judges were Messrs. G. S. Hill. G- Neal, and W. Oarrutfoers; timekeepers, Messrs. Jenness and Binns. In the evening the local club entertained the visitors at the Petone Navals' boatshed, where the usual toasts were honoured. ■ Following are the results of the events: —'

Club maiden race (33 yards)— First heat: Price, 1; Tancred, 2; Smith, 3. Time, 27sec. Second heat: Elbe, 1; Thomas, 2; King, 3. Time, 26 2-ssec. Final: Price, 1; Tanored,"2; Smith, 3. Time, 25 2-ssec. Neatest dive (open).—Saunders (Thorndon), 1; Bowden (Wellington), 2. Open race (50 yards)— First heat: Farnell (ssec.), 1; M'Carlfe (scr.), 2; Lyford (2sec.), 3. Time, 39 l-8seo„ Second heat: Wickens (ssec.), 1; Linden (ssec.), 2; Saunders, (6sec.), 3. Time, 36sec. Final: Wickens, 1; M'Carlie, 2; Farnell, 3. Time, 36sec. 100 yards open event—Sheehy (15sec.), 1; M'Carlie (lsec.), 2; Farnell (12sec.), 3. Time, 86soc. This event proved to be the race of the day, Sheehy winning by a few feet, whilst inches separated the'next five competitors. _ Club handicap (50 yards)—Riddoll, (Bsec.), 1: King (Bsec.), 2; Smith and Tancred, dead heat, 3. Fanny Durack swam ' a hundred ■metres in lrnin. 16 l-ssec., two seconds inside her own previous world's record, and won the 100 yds. ladies' championship in Imin. 8 2-ssec. Two evening events were got off by ths Wairarapa Amateur Athletio Club on the park oval on. Thursday last. The 220 yds. handicap was won by W: Grantham, and the mile handicap by F. ICilmmster.
