THREATENED INVASION OF EGYPT

MAIN TURKISH ARMY NEARING V SUEZ. CANAL THE GERMAN BLOCKADE ■. ; ---:]PPTRAI3 ALABBIED GERMAN LOSSES EIGHT DESTROYERS AND FOUR SUBMARINES . HEAVY FIGHTING AT LA BASSEE

Great events are reported to-day in Central Poland, where the Russians have heavily defeated the German Armies which for many weeks past have been trying to break a wav to Warsaw. Attacking on a limited front in enormous force, the' Germans suffered terrible losses. It was fighting, the reports declare, such as the world had never seen. The Russians not only beat off the massed thousands of Germans who sought to force their lines, but have advanced across the rivers which they were defending and taken np positions on the further side. Simultaneously with their great victory in Central Poland, the Russians have forced several of the Carpathian passes, and invaded Hungary in considerable strength. They have taken two thousand prisoners in a battle on Hungarian soil, south of the Dukla Pass. No new developments of importance are reported in Egypt, but interesting details are given of the recent fighting along the Suez Canal, and of the position, strength, and plans of the main Ottoman Army, which is said to consist of 90,000 Turks and 20,000 Bedouins. A late ( message reports the death of Private W.- A. Ham, a New Zealander who was'seriously wounded in action a few days ago. A number of reports tell, of the indignation excited in neutral countries by Germany's threats of piratical attacks upon merchant vessels by means of submarines. Several of the American ' newspapers are particularly vigorous in their comments. Continued successes by the Allies are re- s ported on the Western front. The first Canadian contingent, thirty thousand strong, has reached tho'front. .
