FERRY CO. & HARBOUR BOARD
TROUBLE IN AUCKLAND. . IBy Tclecraßh.—Press Association.) Auokland, February 5. There has been a further development of !he dispute between the Harbour Board and the Devonport Ferry. Company. Tho board recently raised its charge to the Ferry Company for the us 6 of the wharves to what represented a fair return for tho money invested in the wharves devoted to ferry traffic. The company has now announced that in consequence there will be. a proportionate increase in cost of concession tickets. Discussing the position ■to-day, Mi. Gunson, chairman of the Harbour Board, said that the board had a right to say what fares should be charged, although they could' not force tho company to issue concession tickets, and it would not allow the company to exercise its monopoly of the ferry services to the disadvantage of the public. The company's business was so profitable that its shares were quoted at SO per cent, above nominal value, and 'it paid large dividends and carried largo amounts to reserve. The company could afford.to pay the extra wharfage charge, and if it attempted to pass it on to the public tho board would take the necessary action.
