NATIONAL RESERVE

WELLINGTON EAST SECTION.

About forty men attended the meeting of the Wellington East section of the' National Reserve in Clyde Quay School,last night. Mr. H. N. MacLbod, committeeman in charge of the district, presided. Mr. MacLeod explained tho origin and growth of the_ National Reserve movement, the object of which was to classify and train for the defcnco of the country all those fit for such duty who were not now members of the- Territorial Forces. .... . . Colonel Porter, president of the Central Executive for the military district of Wellington, explained the details of the scheme at length. The meeting at onc'o proceeded. to olect the following committee:—Messrs. A. Veitcli, H. B. Bridge, H. F. Lattey, H. W. Frost, G. Hemmirigway; secretary, Mr,,W. H. Jones: treasurer, Mr. R. M. Roberts. Mr. A. Yeitch was elected chairman of the' committee. THORNDON-WADESTOWN DISTRICT There was a fair muster of members and intending members of the Thorndon--Wadestown district of. the National Re-, serve in the Sydney Street. Schoolroom last night. The business "of .the,'meeting in two words was "To organise." Mr. A.. W. Newton presided, and there were also on the platform Dr. C. Prendergast Knight and Mr. C. B. Mori'son. ■The chairman said he wished to remove a false impression which had arisen, and that was that any person who had not full or part military training was not eligible. This was not so. All were eligible. »The speaker went on to refer to the relations between the National Reserve and the Defence Force and other matters in connection with the Reservo. Messrs. A. W. Newton and C. B. Morison and Dr.' Prendergast Knight are the three representatives from the central committee to represent the district. Mr. L. 0. H. Tripp was elected treasurer, and Mr. E. Wylie secretary. Mr. S. B. Gurden, who has had Imperial service experience, was appointed instructor. Members referred to the fact that the district was fortunate in secur. ing for its use the services of such a competent instructor.

ISLAND BAY SECTION.

A meeting of ihe Island Bay-Berham-pore section of the National Reserve was held on Thursday night. Mr. A. T. Wells was elected 0.C., Mr. C. N. Haslam honorary instructor, and Mr. C. H. Powley assistant honorary instructor. .Messrs. P. C. Watt, —. Adamson, and A. Wliitelaw were' elected to represent the section oh the executive. -After the meeting 40 members paraded for military instruction, and the instructor declared himself well ploased with their- work. On Friday, evening next at 8 o'clock o "Home Defence!' public demonstration in support of the National Reserve will be held in tho Town Hall. His Worship tho Mayor (Mr.- J. P. Luke) will occupy the chair: Mr. Walter Leslie is tho Wellington district secretary.
