AUSTRIANS' DIFFICULT TASK
' NOT NUMEROUS ENOUGH NO ANXIETY IS FELT NOW AT WARSAW (Rec. February 5, 5.50 p.m.) London, February 4. 'A Petrograd message says:—"The last despairing effort of the unhappy Austrians to obey their German masters, and push back tho Russians across the Carpathians was more unsuccessful than their earlier attempts. Tho Austrians are not numerous enough, and-are not provided .with sufficient artillery for the difficult task of advancing over mountains iu the depth of winter against a foe prepared and anxious to meet them. Fighting is hotly progressing over an eighty-mile front from the Dukla Pass to the Syshkov Pass. No anxiety, is now felt at .Warsaw."—-("Times" and Sydney. "Sun"- Services.) THE BATTLE IN THE BORJIMOFF DISTRICT STILL' CONTINUES. Petrograd, February 4. 'A communique states: The battlo iu the Borjimoff district continues with unabated violence. Fighting in tho Carpathians is moro intense owing to German reinforcements. • 'AUSTRIANS FORCED TO EVACUATE TARNOW. (Rec. February 6, 0.45 ajn.) Amsterdam, February 5. 'An Austrian official message states: "We evacuated Tarnow (42 miles east of Cracow) owing to Russian bombardment. A decisive battle is proceeding in tho Dukla region, where we are feeling a strong Russian pressure in the direction of Bukeba and neighbouring passes.
