AN AUTHOR CONVICTED OF FORGERY
THE GRANT HERVEY CASE. (Rec. February 4, 9.10 p.m.) Sydney, February 4. Grant Hervey, the author, has been found guilty of 'forging a telegram to a nowspaper, with the purpose of creating a basis for a libel action. Tho accused pleaded not guilty, and denied "ou his honour, before God," all knowledge of the telegram. • He was remanded for sentonce. [The telegram in question was sent to Mr. Gazzard, proprietor of the "CaEterton News," and signed Livingstone. It stated that Hervey was bankrupt. Counsel for the prosecution stated' that some ill-feeling existed between Hervey and Gazzard, and Hervey's intention was to pave the way for a libel action. Gazzard published the information, and a writ claiming £2000 damages was subsequently issued against the paper. Evidence was given alleging that Hervey secured the sending of tho telegram.]
