The Hon. A. L. Herdmaa is due back in Wellington from the north today. ■» . . ■ The Hon. W. H. Hemes, Minister of Railways, returned to town yesterday afternoon. In the north he spent a few days in his own electorate, and on Tuesday he was present at the opening of a bridge at Te Kawa, a very fine structure, which cost some £5000. Captain Redmond Neili, who is on tho Reserve of Officers of the Princess Victoria's (Royal Irish Fusiliers) Regiment, and who was adjutant to a halfbattalion of the sth (Wellington) Regiment in the Samoan Expeditionary force, will be sent to the front with the reinforcements.—Press Association. Much regret was expressed in Wellington yesterday, when it became known that Mr. Georee Luke, builder and. a brother of the Mayor of Wellinel *° n i ( if r, J - p ; Luke) > had died at w> early hour, in the morning. Up to the time of his retirement the previous night the deceased was in his. usual state of health, and his sudden death in the morning came as a great shock. iJeatn occurred at 4.30 a.m. Mrs Luke was roused from her sleep by hearing her husband breathing heavily and she only had time to speak to him before he exnirecl. Heart trouble was the cause of death. The late Mr Lnke was highly respected in Wellington, and he was a P.M. of the Masonic Lodge. Brooklvn, and a former president of thn Wellington Builders' Association. His wife, a son Mr Manly T,nke. of the office staff of the Union S.S. Co.. and a daughter are left to mourn their loss. Luke, who is at present on a holiday visit to Sydney, and of Mrs T! H Little, of Auckland. The ordinary meeting of the Citv Council, which was to have been heH this evening, has been postponed till to-morrow, as n mark of rnsnpct to the deceased. The funeral will take placo to-morrow afternoon. Father O'Connor, of Napier, who is leaving for Wellington, was entertained by Jim parishioners last nicht, and presented with an illuminated address, a roll-top desk, and a chair, and a gold chalice. Eulogistic references were made by those present to the valuable work carried out by Father O'Connor diinng his nine years' residence in Napier, says our special correspondent. The death occurred at Mataura yesterday morning of one of Southland's earliest pioneers—Mr. Hugh Cameron aged. 80 years. Born at Loch Rannock, Scotland, he sailed in the ship Star of the East te Sydney, where he transhipped to Otago in 1854, settling at Wyndham. About 1866 ho settled at Mataura, acauiring an accommodation housfi, and later Cameron's Hotel. He was identified with the Town Board and Borouirh Council, beinn Mayor of Mataura in 1897 and 1902. Mr. Cameron was one of a'party that walked from Dunedin to Invercamill to pay the purchase money to the Maoris for the Murihikn - block. He married a daughter of Mr. Duncan Bain, of Blueskin, in ]Sfi9, and leaves a widow and four dnnghters (nil married) and five pons (three of ■rfhom are serving in Esypt).—Press Association. Mr. J. B. Brinsden, manager of the Hunlop Rubber Co., returned to Wellington by the Napier express last nicht. Mr. Baxter Buckley returned to town yesterday.
At the Supreme Court, Oamarn,. yesterday, states a Press Association message, a man named William JolinEon was found not guilty of a charge of wounding horses at Otekaike.
