PARK ROAD

ALLEGED DANGEROUS CONDITION, The state of Park Road or Daniel Street Extension, near the Zoo, was the subject of a lengthy discussion at the Finance Committee meeting of the City Council yesterday afternoon, when Mr. W. Tunks, .of the Melrose Ratepayers' Association, as a deputation to the committee, suggested that spoil taken from the Newtown car shed site should be used to fill up two large holes in the road. ■ Mr. Tunks stated that at present the spoil was taken from the car sheds to the reserve at Owen Street, and be contended a much better result would be gained by using it to fill up tho dangerous holes in a road which would one day be of great importance. He quoted the opinion of an engineer that insufficient spoil would be got when the road was improved to fill the holes. At tho same time he held that, on the recommendation of the Reserves Committee, the council had adopted a proposal to use the spoil as he had >'ndicated, and he wanted to keep the council to that undertaking. Councillor G. Frost, chairman of the Reserves Committee, pointed out that the matter mentioned had not been touched by them, but by the council to the Finance Committee for consideration. The city engineer (Mr. W. H. Morton), reporting on the improvements to ba carried out on the road, said that an unsightly cliff wculd harve to be removed. The spoil from that and the necessary straightening of the Toad would be mere than sufficient to_ fill in the holes, and in his opinion it was better to take the car shed spoil to the reserve, and leave a depot for spoil, from the Toad. Councillor Hindmarsh: The position is, Mr. Tunks, that the city- engineer says there will be more than enough spoil from the road,, while your engineer says there will not be, enough. . Mr. Tunks: I am by no means satisfied with your report. ' After further discussion, Mr. Tunks withdrew, on the committee promising to look into the matter.
