FIRES
BIG OUTBREAK AT TAKAKA. (By TeleffraDh—Prees Association.) Nelson, February 2. A fire at Takaka at midnight totally destroyed the Telegraph Hotel and sample room, a vacant shop, and Hawkins's butchery. It originated in the hotel, which contained boarders aad staff numbering fifty.' All got out safely. A bucket brigade saved the Masonic Hotel and Kirk and Co.'s store, both of which were scorched. The Defence Department had ammunition stored in tbe sample room, and some of this exploded, causing alarm. C. Stuart, licensee of the hotel, is reported to have lost £100 in cash. The town was full of visitors for the annual show, held yesterday (Anniversary Day). • The insurances are not yet available. GRASS FIRE IN MARLBOROUGH. Blenheim, February 2. The grass fire in the Upper Awatere district has now been definitely checked. It covered, a smaller extent than was at first reported, and the damage done was less than anticipated. The origin of the fire is not known, but is believed to have been set up by rabbit poison.
