The Hon. JV Allen, who is at present at Dunedin, will leave for Wellington on \Uonday next.. ... . I The Hon. A. L. Herdman left for the north last night to visit the prison camp in the Waimarino district. The Hon. W. Fraser has gone to Otago, where he will open the new completed section of the Catlins Railway. Mr. G. H. Grapes, of the firm of 'Arthur D. Riley and Co., Wellington, ' who left New Zealand for England last June, returned to Wellington yesterday. Captain John M'Leod, M.R.C.V.S., who. was formerly well known in the Ashburton district, has been appointed to take charge of the Queensland remount camp at Wilston, where he has 800 horses under his direction. Captain M'Leod took part in 'the' Boer war from its opening to its close, and was twice wounded in. action. _ For close on twelve months he v/as in command of the Mooi River depot for sick horses, the second largest veterinary hospital in South Africa, employing five veterinary officers, and wis personally thanked by Lord Kitchener for the good results obtained. Mr. and Mrs. Abraham Levy returned to Wellington by the Moeraki from Sydney yesterday, after an extended visit to England. . It is stated that Mr. H. Campbell, of Havelock North, will be nominated for the chairmanship of the Hawke's Bay River Board. The Rev. Father O'Connor, who is leaving Napier on Thursday for Wellington, will be the recipient of a presentation to-night, a very large sum having already been subscribed for that purpose. Dr. Martin returned to Wellington last evening after a visit to Napier. Mr.'o. B. Westmacott arrived m Wellington from Sydney by the Moeraki yesterday to, make arrangements for the forthcoming visit to New Zealand of Louis Meyer and Beaumont Smith's "Glad Eye" Company. The season will open on February 17 at the Grand Opera House, and in addition to the above-mentioned piece, "The Ch'aperono" and "'Who's the Lady" will be produced. The next production to bo given in New Zealand under the same nanagement will be "Seven Little Ausiralians," in which the well-known Wellington child-artist, Miss Cecil Haines, will appear.
