Marnuis, the regimental dog of the French' 23rd Foot, is dead. In one of the latest engagements Marquis was entrusted with a message from one set of trenches to another. He had often been on a similar errand, and although shot at scores of times, had nover been hit. Fate failed to favour him to the end, and this time he was struck down just as another couple of bounds would have carried him into safety. He died as the message was being untied from his collar. Marquis was a big retriever, and had been taught to "go for" a German uniform whenever ho saw it. Jt has been calculated by au officer with a turn for mathematics that the weight of bullets required to kill a man in tltis war is something like 1G8I1)., or list., more than the weight of the average man himself. This, is in spite of the immense improvements in modern weapons as compared with those in use in previous great wars. In the first line of defenco or attack a soldier often fires 400 cartridges in a day.
