MORE INCORRECT REPORTS
THE MAIN FORCE AND THEIR CANTEENS. (Uj Tweemßii—Wees Association) Dunedin, January 30. • Rumours as to exploitation of troops while en route to .Egypt were mentioned by the Hon. James Allen, Defeuco Minister, in an interview to-day. The Minister said: "The Government will make no profit whatever out of the canteens. Whatever profit is made—and I do' not, anticipate much —goes to the regimental funds of the men who are using the canteens. The Government and the Defence Department don't get a farthing out of it. As to the allegation that the gifts to troopers from people were sold at high prices in the troopship canteens, I cabled to General Godley, stating -.that the newspapers had reported, on the assertions of troopers, that the gifts were being charged for at the canteens. General Godley's reply came this morning, as follows:— 'The newspaper reports are incorrect; no gifts were sold in the' canteens aboard the troopships.'"
