SECOND MATE'S ERROR

WAKATERE-KATIE COLLISION. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, January 30. Mr. Eraser, S.M., gave judgment in the nautical inquiry regarding tho collision between tho steamer Wakatere and the scow Katie S.M., in Tamaki Strait on December 16.

He found that the accident was caused by Neil M'Arthur, second mate of the Wakatere, misjudging tho distanco and position of the scow; that he' had committed a breach of the regulations for tho prevention of collisions at sea, and that he was misled by tho loom of high land.

M'Arthur was ordered to pay ten guineas, the costs of the investigation.
