Viob-Eeoal. Tho Tutanekai, which has been searching unsuccessfully for the Endeavour, put in at Dunedin on Saturday morning with the Governor on board. His Excellency went north by the second express. Lord. Liverpool spent a brief holiday on Stewart Island.
Sir Robert and Lady Stout returned to Wellington from the South by the Wahine yesterday morning. Dr. Stout was a passenger by the same vessel.
The Rev. C. F. Askew, vicar of St. Mark's, is at present seriously ,ill in a private hospital in New Plymouth. Some 10 days ago when he was at Mountain House with a party climbing Mount Egmont, Mr. Askew was suddenly taken very ill, and he was conveyed at once to New Plymouth. During the days following his condition was critical, but the news yesterday was better. In any event he will be unable to come homo to Wellington for some weeks. The Rev. Stuart Ogden, curate in charge of Roseneath, who was to have left for Perth shortly, is staying in his present position for a month longer on account of Mr. Askew's illness.
Mr. J. H. Gunson has (states a Press Association telegram) agreed to accept nomination for tho Auckland Mayoralty.
The election of a member of the Arbi-' tration Court as representative of the employers of the Dominion, vice Mr. William Scott, of Dunedin, who recently retired, has resulted in the return of Sir. F. E. Duthie, formerly manager of the New Zealand Express Company in Dunedin. The other candidates were Mr. S. I. Clarke, of Auckland, and Mr. J. B. Lanrenson, of Christehurch.
The following are somo.,of the engagements of the Anglican Bishop of Wellington (Dr. Sprott) during the present month:—February 5, Auckland: Meeting of New Zealand Mission Board, meeting of St. John's Board of Governors. February 19, Wanganui: Meeting of School Trustees. February 21, Eltham: Confirmation. February 24, Wellington: Meeting of Standing Committee.
Lieutenant H. A. Davies, R.N.Z.A., who had just completed a successful course of training in England at tho outbreak of tho war, has (according to a private cablegram) just been granted a week's leave. He passed over to France with tho Expeditionary Force, attached to the —th Battery, R.F.A., and consequently has been at the front continuously. During tho absence of a nephew of the late Lord Roberts, he acted as orderly officer to the Headquarters Staff, aud now holds that position to the colonel of the battery.
Captain Clifton, a prominent resident of Pahiatua, who has been connected for many years with a large number of public institutions, and who has volunteered for active service, was tendered a civic farewell on Saturday night. The Mayor, Mr. Crewe, made him a presentation on behalf of the citizens. Captain Clifton also received gifts from the Rifle Club, the Masonic Lodge, and tho Methodist Church.—Press Association.
Tho representatives of the Methodist Conference of Now Zealand, who will attend the annual meeting of the Board of Foreign Missions, to be held in Sydney on Wednesday, are Mr. C. M. Luke, of "Wellington, the Rev. S. Lawry, of Christchurch. and the Rev. W. Slade, who is at present in Australia on his return trip from the Old Country.
Mr. A. Bell, who for close on two years has acted as secretary of tho Southland Education Board/ has been advised that he has been appointed Senior Inspector iii the Education Department, Wellington. Mr. Bell will take up his new duties probably in about a mouth's time.
The friends of Dr. Begg, who is with the Main Expeditionary Force, will bo clad to hear of his welfare. Ho writes cheerfully and is very well.
Captain N. Adams, Nelson, is at the Trentham camp at present.
