Several lines of new\wheat havo changed .; ' hands- during the wcelc. The crops thresh- ! ' ert have turned out beyond expectations,
and the Bamplcß submitted so far arc excellent. The prices reported to have been paid range from 6s. to 6s. 6d. at country stations. When the price 'of imported wheat was fixed at ss. 9d. by the Government, no price was fixed lor flour,, and this matter is still under consideration by the mercantile community. Millers ore charging £15 per ton. There is keen inquiry lor new oats, and eale3 of a few samples have taken place since last report. Prices range from 3s. to 3s. 2d., the latter 'being for "A" Otc&do Gartons. . For new oatsheaf chaff up to £4 bs. is offered, but without finding sellers. A small quantity of old oatsheaf chaff is still offering and selling, up to £4 155.. there being a good demand from the North Island. A number of lines of new season's barley have been : sold at prices ranging from ss. to ss. 6d„ according to quality, at country stations. A small quantity of good sed is offering, but tbo prices asked ore generally boyond buyers', limits. ." NAPIER WOOL BALE. Napier, January 29. The third wool Bale of the season was held to-day, when 9683 bales were offered to a good attendance of buyers. The bidding was spirited, and high prices were roalised. The wool was very dirty owing to the recent dusty wsathor, but was in great demand to fill requirements of manufacturers of uniforms for soldiers. Scoured wool brought np to 20ld. and lambs' wool ft as also in great demand, making up to 14id. ■ The following is & comparison of iho prices ruling at this sale and tho December sale, the figures for the latter being given in parentheses :—Best halfbred,-91d. to 135 d. The following are the latest quotations' for Consols and Colonial Government Securities with a comparison- of those ruling last week:—
MONET .MARKET. The Bank of England discount rate ,was on January 2, 1914, reduced* from 5 to 41 per cent., on January 22 it was reduced to 4 per cent., and on January 28 to 3 per cent. On July 30 the .rate was raised to 4'per cont.,' on July 31 it was raised to 8 per oent., and on August 1 it was further advanced to 10 per cont. On August 6 "the rate was reduced to 6 per cent., on August 7 it was further reduced to 6 per cent., at which rate it now stands. The Bank of Franco rate is 7 per cent., as against 4 per cent, last year. OPEN MARKET BATES. The open market discount rato for three months' bills is 1 -15-16 per cent., as compared with 1 15-16 per cent, last week, and 2 5-16 per oent. last year. . Short loans are quoted at 2 per cent., as against 18 per cent, last week, and 2 por cent, last year. COLONIAL' AND OTHER PRODUCE. Wheat is firm, and is 3d- to 6d. dearer upon reports of heavy rains and hail in Argentina and Northern Manitoba. Feb-ruary-March shipment, 59a. 9d. Flour.—Australian, ex store, 425. 6d. to 435. 6d. Barley is quiet, but firm. Australian brewing, 40s. Oats.—The market is firm. Bahia Blanca February-March shipment, 295. 7Jd. Peas are flrin. New Zealand . maples, 60s. to 68s. Beans are steady.
