TESTING THE 1915 B.S.A.

The B.S.A. Company is a great believer in gaining first-hand information concerning the road conditions in the countries where B.S.A. motor-cycles are used, and Mr.'D. Y. Rennie, the firm's travelling representative, was recentlysent to. New Zealand to spy out .the land.' Messrs. Adams, Ltd., planned a trip for jlr. Rennie which would demonstrate the 'difficulties that beset the New Zealand motor cyclist in quite a striking manner. With Mr. G. B. Broun. Mr. Rennio took a B.S.A. 4Jh.p. .single-cylinder motorcycle three-speed countershaft gear (of course) and Ride-car from Christchurch through Arthur's Pass to Otira, Kumara, Mnrchison, Nelson, Blenheim, Glenhope, Seddon, Kaikoura, Waiau. and Hanmor, 800 miles, all overland. The trip was a tough one, but the B.S.A. and side-car (weighing SOOlb. with passengers), earns through magnificently. The capabilities of the 3-spefcd gear-were fully demonstrated, and so pleased were Messrs Adams, Ltd.. with the result of this gruelling "try-out" that t'ne.v cabled trebling their standing orders for B.S.A. motor-cycles. A small shipment lias just arrived, and prospective pupchafers should order early. Adams, Ltd , Christchurch, Palraerston North, and Wanganui. Agent's: Sutherland and Rankine, Wellington* Tourist Motor Co,. Hastings.—Advt,

The following rifle ranges at Trentham have been allocated for to-dayCollins Range: Targets 1 to 15, sth (Wellington) Regiment, class firing; targets 21 to 25, "A" Squadron, 6th (Manawatu) Mounted Rifles, class firing. Sommerville Range: Targets 1 to 8, Karon Rifle Club, 500 and 600 yards; targets 22 to ; 25, Defence Rifle Club, 500 and 600 yards. Seddon Range: I'hieo targets, Highland Rifle Club, 800 and 900 . yaxds. ' Donald M'Gilhrray, the City Corporation linesman, who was injured while attending to repairs at. the top of an olectric light pole on Wednesday, waß reported from the hospital last night ■ to be still in a critical condition. Counoillor L. M'Kenzie has given notice to move at tlie nest meeting of the City Council as follows: —"That the resolution passed at the. last council meeting, agreeing to alte? tho Courtenay Place tram fcrminu6, be reconsidered: That a fresh plan be prepared' Tunning the trams through the reserve 'with a resting line in the centre which would allow the reserve cars to be ■diverted to ..either line: That a station, :suitable for all time, 1)0 erected, ana that all roads be conserved for vehicu!]ar traffic." " Defence officers express satisfaction • hrith the progress of the Maori continigent at Avondale. Tactical oxercises iare now being practised by the men. Nearly all the 58 members of 'the main body of the New Zealand Expediitionary Force who returned to Auckland ifrom Egypt last week have reoeived the •full amount of pay due to them. = They were discharged as from December 18. l Some of the men have left' Auckland,. i«o the sums owing to them will be forwarded by post.. The men have been masked to return their uniforms to the Department. > The secretarv of the_ 'Auckland fiLicensed Victuallers' Association states I that despite inoreased wages and the 'increased cost of commodities during •the last seven or eight years the Trade :has never put up prices, but tbe effect of the war-risk charges caused the association to set up_ a committee-to go into the question with a view to slightly .increasing the cost of spirits taken away j.from tho hotels. Liquor of all descriptions consumed on the premises will ;be •sold as formerly. English beer has increased in cost, but no extra charge will Abe made. An effort is being made at Onehunga 'to secure the .unimproved value system 'of rating in the borough. The promoters of tho movement are canvassing the town to obtain the necessary number of signatures, amounting to 15 per cent, of the total number of ratepayers on tho ticll. Recruits are now being enrolled for tthe Sixth Reinforcement draft of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. The Sixth Contingent will probably not Seave New Zealand until about tho fiiiddle of March. The Salvation Army's war relief and emergency fund has now reached £4500. The following are the latest donations: r-G- Hunter,,M.P., £100; E. J. White ;(Porangahau), £50; P. Hunter (Otane), i£so; Mr. and Mrs. White'(Porangahau), £26; St. Hill (Porangahau), £50; Williams Bros. (Pukehou), £50. Having, in view the present deplorJnble conditions at Home consequent on j-the war. the fire, marine, and accident [insurance offices in Wellington have decided to forgo their annual picnic this 'year, and devote their picnic contributions to the Relief Fund for the Belgians and the Poor of Great Britain rod' Ireland. Tbe part which Labour |b to play in Hhis year's municipal elections is to be decided on at a meeting- in the Trades Hall on Tuesday night. It is probable ithat the Labour Representation Com'.mittee, which was set -up to conduct [•the campaign of the Trades Hall nom■inees at the recent Parliamentary election. will be asked to take charge of the affairs for Labour at the civic poll. At •the last municipal election Labour ran , ifull tickets—nominated enough men to < ftill the fourteen seats at the City Coun-cil-table, all the seats on tho Harbour , [Board, and all on the Hospital and' iCharit-able Aid Board. It is stated • fthat this year that idea will almost cer- ' ■ Mainly be departed from, and only a moderate number of candidates will be : ■aominated for each body. It is unlikely that the Trades Hall will nominate Sinyone for the Mayoralty. I Special reference was made by Mr. C. |iE. St-atham in the course of his political \address before a great meeting of elecjtors at the Princess' Theatre in Dunedin '(says an exchange) to what lie termed ithe "mud-slinging" tactics of his opjponents. He had positive proof, he declared, of the circulation of wild statements about him. It had been stated, for example, that he had shares in a brewery, ana that brewers were paying Jail his election expenses. '(Laughter, and tie advice: "Don't you take it, ■Charlie 1") These statements were, absolutely false, and had not the leas'i foundation in fact. Then there were the deliberate mis-statements with rejgard to the hours for women workers iin woollen'mills, and the sis-day week ' (for workere in hotels and restaurants, ! which were being circulated as industriously as ever, in spite of the fact 'that these allegations had been proved (to be utterly false. (Applause.) It had fheen stated, too, quite openly, that he j-ihad squared the Magistrate and the Re'gister. of Electors on the recount, i (Laughter.) It was ooming to a pretty ■pass when ettaements like these were made. One of the most ludicrous rumours he had heard was that his father- , in-law (Mr. William Burnett, an ex- ' Mayor of Dunedin), was the poll clerk .at Caversham who made the mistake iwith tbe ballot-papers. (Laughter.) It ! was hardly necessary for him to give (' that, a most emphatic denial. Ho menVtioned that definite instructions had been given to his committees that they must on no account make any personal reflections upon Mr." Munro.. ■ Mr. H. Lan Simson has lodged a petition against the eleotion of Mr. H. J. H. Glazebrook as a member for the Clivo Ward on tho Hawko's Bay Rivers ißcard. Since- tho conclusion of the recent vi-Tev.reat of the clergy of the Catholic arch-diocese of Wellington, the followSng changes havo been announced: —At St Mary's, Greenmeadows, -the Very Rev. Dr. Martin is appointed Superior, replacing the Very Rev. Dean Smyth, ■who is now S.M. Provincial. - The Rev. iFa'ther Tymons (Thorndon) has been appointed Vice-Superior and Procurator, replacing the Rev. Father M"Donnell, who takes charge cf the Hastings '■parish. The Very Rev.
