| POLIGE & BY-LAW CASES A, LENGTHY LIST Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., presided over a sitting of the Magistrate's Court yesterday. . A charge of posting a postal packet having thereon words of a most offensive character was preferred against Judah Barsht. Chief-Detective Boddam explained that the charge had been laid under Section 83 of the Post,and Telegraph Aot, 1908, and defendant was liable to a fine of £2-5. Defendant pleaded guilty. "I have nothing to say, I place myself in your hands," said accused to the s Magistrate. A fine of £5, with costs 75., was imposed. A young Maori named Joe Rawiri, who stole 255., the property of Nellie O'Leary, and a gold-mounted tobacco pouch, the property of Frank H. Phillips, from rooms in tho Caledonian Hotel, was sentenced to ono month's imprisonment for each offence. Inspector Hendrey explained that accused had recently undergone reformative treatment.

Samuel Robert William Smith came before Mr. W. F. Riddell, S.M., for sentence on three charges of obtaining goods by means of false pretences. The Magistrate sentenced him to two years' reformative treatment. Mr. P. W. Jackson appeared- on accused's behalf. Young Fah, a Chinaman, was committed to the Supreme Court for trial on a serious charge in respect to a little girl of seven aivl a half years. Bail was allowed in the sum of £50.

Samuel Isaacs appeared to answer two charges (1) loitering in "Willis Street for the purpose of betting, and, (2) loitering on the footway on Willis Street after having been directed by • a constable to move on. Mr. W. Perry appeared on his behalf, and asked for a remand to next Monday. For drunkenness, Patrick Sullivan was fined £2, in default seven days' imprisonment. Daniel M'Randall (prohibited) was fined 205., default being fixed, at three days' imprisonment. Three first offenders were dealt with, while one was remanded pending an application that he be committed to a reformative institution. Inspector Henry, of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, proceeded against John Boake on, ,a, charge of cruelly ill-treating a working it while, in an unfit condition; A fino of £2, 'with £2 costs, • was imposed. After hearing considerable evidence; the Magistrate dismissed the charges against' Andrew Running and Percival Tlios.' Flint, in which the former proceeded against the latter for assault, and the latter against Running. ' Mr'. P. W. Jackson appeared for Running. BY-LAW CASES. Hannah Minahan, a small shopkeeper, was fined ss. for soiling a pennyworth of sweets to a child on Sunday. The following were fined 55., with coats 75., for allowing horses or cattle to wander: —James Edward Leckie, Albert Francis Tonks, Henry Fairclough, Walter Hadley, Wm.' Hedge, Ernest Hadley, Mrs. Hendricksen, Alexander Lyons, John Newbury, Felix Nozajc, Paul Olsen. Stanley Fryer, Elizabeth Robertson, Joseph Taylor, John Wilcox, Monro Moffat, Henry Lindsay, and . Stanley and Wate (two informations). Similarly charged, the following were fined 10s., with costs 7s.: —Wra. F. Fogden (two charges), Henry Grant, Chas. Bethcll, and A. and C. Odlin. Similarlv charged, John Hamilton was fined 10s., with costs 135., and T. Thomson was ordered to pay costs 7s. Fines of ss. were imposed on the 'following for committing by-law breaches: —Wm. Henry Palmer, R. C. Collins, George 1 Wonnocott, Lionel Bidwill Rhodes, and Daniel Anderson. For using an unlicensed vehicle for hire. Wm. Rhodes was fined 10a., with costs 7s. For failing to comply with a drainage notice, Larney Bros, were fined 10s., with costs 7s.' Walter Hadley was fined 10 s., with oosts 95., for unlawfully removing sand from property at Houghton Bay.
