MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
STOLEN MAILS ALLEGED CULPRITS IN COURT Two seamen off the' Corinthic, who were arrested the previous day on board that vessel, appeared before Mr. D. 6. A. Cooper, S.M., yesterday in the Magistrate's Court, charged that between December 10 and January 27, while the Corihthic was on its way from London to Wellington they stole one mail bag and contents, the property of the Post-master-General. Oliief-Detective Boddam asked,for a remand until next Wednesday. Both accused were accordingly remanded to February. 3. POSTING INDECENT DOCUMENTS, j A respectable-looking, married woman ] named Annie Rudd was charged with four offences of causing to be sent through the post indecent documents to a WeUingtou dentist and his wife, and another Wellington dentist. Counsel for defendant, Mr. G. Fell, enterd a plea of guilty. Mr. T. W. Young, who appeared for the informants, intimated that he wished to withdraw three of the charges, as informants would be a penalty were inJKoted in respect to one of the charges; The Magistrate consented to this being done. He pointed out that defendant was liable to a fine of £100. "The letters are absolutely nothing but filth,'' he said. Ho would accept ooun6el's statement that the woman must have a kink in her mind. A fine of £5 1 with costs £3 3a. was imposed. THE CASE OF AN EX-TROOPER. An ex-trooper, named Andrew John Davidson) pleaded guilty-to two charges of stealing bicycles, valued at £6 10s. and £5, the property respectively of ; Arthur Sixsmith and Ernest Heath. It 'was explained that until recently ac- ' cased had been a member of the Expeditionary Force. He had been found lying unconscious on the railway lines near Trentham recently, and as a result had to have his hand amputated. Accused was still an inmate of the Hospital. It was,further stated that he bad been previously convicted for different offences. The Magistrate imposed a sentence 'of seven days' ■ imprisonment on each charge. TWO SEAMEN IN TROUBLE. " Donald Chisholm, a seaman off the Mitniro, was charged with being absent without leave from that vossel. It appeared from the evidence that when the vessel arrivod here Chisholm inquired if there was going to be "any money at port." On receiving a reply in the negative, Chisholm said, "Well, no money nor work." Accused had then left the vessel, and had returned later. The Magistrate ordered him to forfeit ono month's pay and to pay £1 Is. costs. Mri T. W. Young appeared for the master of the vessel.
Joseph Nayler, a seaman off the Mafcarini, was charged with disobeying the lawful commands of the chief officer of that vossel. Mr. T. Young appeared for tho master of the vessel. A.line of &2,. with costs £1 Bs., was imposed, the amount to be deducted from accused's wages. OTHER CASES. James Henry Evans made his fourth appearance before tho Court on the charge of having worn, the uniform of His Majesty's Forces. Nothing further was said about his case beyond an application by Inspector Hendrey that he be handed over to the military authorities. The Magistrate granted the application. John Jenkins was convicted and discharged for drunkenness) and fined £3, with witnesses' expenses 45., in default one month's imprisonment, for using obscene language. Mary Louißa Scott was further remanded to February 1' on a charge of being a rogue and .a, vagabond. Ethel Susan Knapp and Alice Mar-, garet Knapp, two girls, aged respectively twenty and eighteen years, were further reamnded to February 1 on charges "of being idle and 'disorderly. CASES. A civil, claim concerning Becond-harid household property put up for auction sale, was heard before Mr. W. G. Rid-'dell.'-Gr. Knopp claiming £5 16s. for goods and damages in this respect, from M. Badger and G. R. M'Callnm and Co., auctioneers. After hearing considerable evidence, the Magistrate gave judgment for plaintiff for £1 10s., with costs lis. "The whole affair is trivial," was the Magistrate's comment, "and it should never have been brought before tho Court." Mr. J. F. W.
