A wireless message has been received from Captain Stringer, of E.M.S. Moana, stating that he expected his vessel to arrive at Wellington .from San Francisco on Sunday morning. After landing 1060 tons of cargo the Moana will sail for Sydney at 5 ' p.m. on Monday. MAMASI REPORTED. Bound from Wellington to London, the liner Manwui is reported to have left Monte Video on January 26. The vessel cleared Wellington on the morning of December 6. ISLANDS TRADE FROM AUCKLAND. The Island trade has been causing much dissatisfaction among Auckland business people, says an exchange. In reply to a request for a bigger and faster vessel, the local manager of the Union Company has replied that the company was reluctantly forced to withdraw the Talune from the Eastern Pacific trade and substitute the Taviuni, a smaller and slower steamer, on account of the very heavy losses the running of the former vessel entailed each trip, after the outbreak of war. The falling-off in cargo has been in a gTeater proportion that the diminution in tonnage of the steamer employed. The letter states that 'the carrying capacity of the Taviuni is 1450 tons, but her cargoes Bince she entered the Eastern Pacific trade have been as follow:—October 20, outwards, 598 Ions; November 4, inwards, 611 tons; and November 26, outwards, 585 tons. The breakdown of the Taviuni on her last two trips was stated to. have been occasioned by the presence of an extraneous piece of metal in one of the cylinders, which appeared to have accidentally got there when the machinery was dismantled for overhaul and Government inspection some - little time back. A recurrence was therefore considered most unlikely. •NEW AUSTRALIAN STEAMERS. MeFsrs. Howard Smith, Ltd., have received advices that the new steamer Ohronos has been launched on the Clyde. During last year the Australian Steamships Lid. (Howard Smith, Ltd., managing agents), placed orders oh the Clyde for the construction of two cargo steamers, somewhat similar to the Aeon. These two vessels will carry about 6000 tons, and will bo engaged in the interstate trade. The Ohronos, which is the first of the two, will be followed by the Macedon. . A third and smaller vessel, to replace the. Kouoowarra. is now being built, and wiH fallow tho Maocdon. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. Duff, who ha? been en inmate of tho Wellington Hospital, has joined the local office staff of tho Union Company temporarily. Mr. C. Oroucher, chief officer or the Awaroa, has left that vessel at Wellington. Mr. 3. H'Donald has joined tho vessel as second officer in place of Mr. Scott. Mr. J. M.Nemenv has aolned the A ware* as second ongineer, and Mr. H. Carey as third. Mt W. M.N. Spiera, late purser of the Monowad. has been granted leave to Join the Expeditionary Forces. Mr. J. B. Smith, late purser of the Pateena, will join the Monowai as purser. Mr S. K. Ewon, lato purser of tho Rosamond, has ben appointed purser of the Pateena. . ~ Captain Kendall in now xn eharge of the Union Company's big caTEo-oarner Wairuna. LLOYD'S REGISTER REPORT. •■ RECORD YEAR. The annual report of Lloyd's Register of Shipping for 1913-14 is one of absorbing interest It shows that at tho close of tho veer on June 30, 1914, 10,621 merchant vessels registering 23,870,665 tons gross, held classes assigned by the Committee of Lloyd's Register.
