ACTIVITY IN THE SUEZ CANAL
TROOPS AND WARSHIPS GATHERING FIGHTING THE TURKS NEAR- PORT SAID m.' ■ '~....,„, Cait °i January 27. Inere is much activity m the Canal; troops and warships are assembling. It is senu-officially stated that a reconnaissance inflicted severe losses on. the Turks near Mezern. The British casualties were fifty. Fighting occurred on the east side of the Canal at El Kantara (twentyseven miles south of Port Said), the British casualties being five. The Turks opened fire with mountain guns, and the patrol' replied from the machine-guns and rifles. The Turks did not show any desire to come to close quarters. .There are small bodies of men at three other points on the east side of the Canal, but they did not come in contact with the British troops A hydro-aeroplane dropped a bomb on a Turkish column at Bimuradad inflicting losses. PLAN OF THE TURKISH ADVANCE. (Reo. January 29, 0.55 a.m.) mi t> ■! r London, January 28. The "Daily News's" Athens correspondent says that the Turks are preparmg to advance on the Canal in three lines. The first near the coast the second twelve miles inland, and the third further south. German engineers will construct a light railway keeping pace with the advance, to supply water. PRECAUTIONS IN THE SUEZ CANAL. x (Reo. January 29, 1.35 a.m.) ' „ , , , , , Cairo, January 28. Merchantmen have been ordered to enter the Canal in convoys, crews and passengers to keep below as much as possible, and ships' bridges to be protected with sandbags or steel plates. Haul Pasha, commander of the Eleventh Turkish Army Corps, was executed at the instance of Enver Pasha, for blundering at Karaurgan. ENGLISH ADVANCE IN BAGDAD. . „.„. London, January 27. Tiflis Teports that news has been received of the. success of the English force moving upon Bagdad. The situation of tho Turks in the province of Azerbeijan (in the north-west of Persia) has changed for the worse.
