IN NORTH SEA FIGHT
ADMIRAL BEATTY'S STORY ANOTHER GERMAN CRUISER ACCOUNTED FOR ■ . . . ■ _ OBSTINATE STRUGGLE AT LA BASSEE : The chief item of interest in to-day's war news istfee sßnpV-taH but eloquently suggestive story by Vice-Admiral Sir David Beatty of the North Sea fight; of the first sight of the enemy's squadron, the pursuit, and the raging inferno of shell-fire with which the British battle-cruisers Lion and Tiger 6teamed on their errand of destruction. The Lion was crippled by a lucky shot from-the Germans, striking one of the bftttle-cruiser's feed-tanks, and putting the port engine out of action, necessitating the towing of the warship to port. It now appears, from Admiral Beatty's report that another German cruiser, the Kolberg, was sent to her account in the same engagement. A destroyer is reported to have sighted the periscope of a submarine, and instantly charged the spot, tell-tale streaks of oil appearing on the surface to testify to the tragedy below. Obstinate fighting, with heavy loss to the Germans, has taken place near Lai Bassee, while in the Woevre district important developments are pending. In tho Eastern theatre the Russians have taken the aggressive in Bast Prussia, and are pushing forward towards Tilsit. In Egyptj the dersfapraeut of events is beginning to assume the appearanco of something like a definite advance by the Turks towards the Egyptian frontier, and outpost skirmishes have been reported.
