RELAXING THE ECONOMIC STRAIN

'Shortly _ after the outbreak of war, fMr. Justice Heydon, President of!the j Industrial Court, , announced that owing ; to war conditions the Court would, in ■ all but exceptional cases, hold back.in- '< creases of wages until the position had improved. ' To-day Mr. ' Justice Heydon reviewed (the economic situation, and pointed • out that the periods of the war and its effects had been reviewed, and the prosipects of the coming yeai discussed by ! newspapers elsewhere.' Nearly all these ' reviews were hopeful, and commented on the power shown by the State' to \ resist the pressure of the war and the ['drought. Justice Heydon commented on the amount of unemployment, which ' was less than was anticipated. , The iwool outlook was much improved. In - view of these considerations, he that some- relaxation of the rule should be made. Boards- may . now '■consider claims for increases. Government . employees, however, would not be inolided in the relaxation, though they could submit special claims.
