THE FISH MARKET.
FIRST ANNUAL REPORT.
Tho manager of tho Municipal Fish Market, Mr. P. H. Alward, presented a report to the City Council 011 Thursday showing the business dono by the market during 1914. Tho report included a table showing tho value of fish sold and tho number of sales made for each month of the year, with comparative figures for 1913. This table was as under:—
Value of Number of Fish Sold. Sales Made.
Tl. 3174 8 10 2187 1 7 47,177 34,890
The table shows that the value of fish sold increased by £987 7a. 3d., and the number of purchases made grew by 12,287. "During the last threo months, October, November, and December," Mr. Alward states, "owing to the continued bad weather fish has been very .scarce indeed, the supply not being equal to tho demand; this has resulted in a falling off in the business transacted compared with the corresponding three months of last year. If the supply had been normal, the year's trading must have shown considerably more than £1000 increase over last year. Throughout the year thero has been fish on sale every day that tho market has been open for business, with the exception of two days only. Tho _ quality and freshness of the fish Tcceived for sale has been generally good, and very few complaints have been made regarding lisli bought by tho public. In a market of this description, receiving fish from all sources, it sometimes happens that a consignment from a distance arrives in not toe good order. Whenever I have any of doubtful quality I condemn the same to the destructor; but so long as the fish is fit for consumption I can do no other than sell the same."
