TRENTHAM RACES.
CONCLUDING DAY
BIG HANDICAP WON BY PAVLOVA HELBURN PLATE CROESUS SCORES AGAIN Favoured by beautifully fine weather tie Wellington Racing Club brought its Summer Meeting to a very successful close on Saturday. There was a very large attendance of the publio and tho totalisator figures for the day broke all previous club records. The investments on the eight races amounted to £43,516, making an aggregate of £124,389 for the tliree days, a substantial increase on the figures—£lo6,33o — for the three days of the last Summer Meeting. The rains of the previous day had freshened up the lawns without leaving them damp, while the racing track was in splendid condition, the new straight courses being again used for the short-distance events. * During the day, the stewards reopened the case of C. Emerson, who had been suspended on Friday, but decided that the decision arrived at should stand. The victories of Pavlova, Tarlngamutu, Croesus, and Gold Soult were followed by popular demonstrations, nil the horses named having won previously at the fixture. Bonny Eigg and' Blackall were both heavily supported in the opening event, the Wallaceville "Welter, and between them they carried over half the money on the totalisator. Neither paid a dividend, however, the race being won by Rereliau, who was followed home by the consistent Jem. The latter was most unfortunate in again suffering defeat as he covered more ground than any other candidate in the race, and was then only half a length awav from the winner at the finish'. With the exception of Hoy, Rereliau was the biggest outsider to prevail at the meeting.
Banksia', who finished third- in her Taco on the opening day, improved on that effort by running second in the Douro Cnp on Friday, and on Saturday she produced winning form, and carried off the Melrose Welter, in which Crown Pearl and Belasco were both bettc-r favourites than the Riccarton mare. On account of the fact that C. Emerson was unable to ride, L. Wilson had the mount on Banksia and during the afternoon had the other winning mounts (Pavlova and Emperador), which, in the ordinary course of events, would have been taken by Emerson.
Happiness was withdrawn from the Hopeful Stakes Handicap, and this left six runners. Taringamutu, who had won the Nursery Handicap on the opening day, was made a mood favourite, as her owner, Mr. G.. Nash, made no secret of the fnct that he expected the Charlemiwne II filly to he successful again. With every race, Taringamutu appears to improve at the barrier. She stood very quietly until the tapes were released on Saturday, and although sho did not commence as quickly as Samisen and Dribble, sho finished in the most determined manner possible. The victory was a moritorious'one, because sho had to fight out every inch of the last furlong to win by a head from Dribble, to whom sho was conceding 151b.
California was a treble winner at the Trentham Winter Meeting a few years ago, and there have been other treble winners, but Pavlova is the only treble winner whoso victories comprised the big handicap on each day of the Summer Meeting. In the Summer Handicap, on Saturday, the little bay mare scored even more handsomely than sho had done in the Racing Club Handicap on Friday. She did quite a lot of fast wcrk since arriving at the course the previous week, and on top of it all she improved with every Tace. Also, sho had a new horseman every day, she 1 won on different sorts of going, with heavy and light imposts, and proved equal to gaining a victory from the position of pacemaker or from another position. She might, indeed, be classed a model racehorse.
Dinner Gong, who was concerned in the accident in the Wellington Stakes on "Friday, was withdrawn from the Kelburn Plate, as was Wise Bird, who was reserved for the City Handicap. Tho race was run over the straight half-mile, Croesus being made a better favourite than the Dunedin Stakes winner, Nones. In the first couple of furlongs Croesus seemed to run about a lot with Deeley, but as .soon as the course proper was reached, he settled down with his long sweeping stride, and ran in a very easy winner from Nones and Downham. Although tho halfmile was run in the very fast time of •IBsec., the Royal Fusilier gelding looked as if he could have improved on thai, had it been necessary to do so. Gold Soult scored his third victory ••it the meeting when he carried his impost- of 9st. 61b. home ahead of tho iie'd in the Kaitoke -Handicap. Althnugh he only scored by the narrowest, of margins from Fair Rosamond's .'mlf-brother, Black Heart, the winner would have been unfortunate had be been boaten, as he got away badly, and had to steer a course round the outside of several of the candidates.
Tlie good form shown by Ogier in tlie Wellington Cup, and his second to Pavlova in the Summer Handicap ought to hivo resulted in his being well-backed in the Consolation Handicap, but he was only sixth in demand in a field of ten. He practically won from end to end, but had little to sparo at the finish from Kilrain and Marshal M'Donald. 'l'ha tliree favourites, Indigo, Hyettus, and Fair Rosamond, failed to gain place 3.
One of the most exciting finishes of the meeting was seen in the City Handicap; when Emperador and Wiso Bird struggled past tho post locked together.. The judgo's verdict was in favour of Emperador by half a head, a iiew record for tho courso boing estabHsho'l. Blue Lake, who was responsible for the fast pace set in the early stages, finished last.
