n GRAND OPERA HOUSE. "Under Two Flags" was staged by u'illoughby Dramatic Company at the Grand Opera. House again last night, beforo a large audience, and the performance was a thoroughly enjoyable one. The cast is a strong one, the various parts being acted in 'a convincing style. The work of Miss Vera Remee as Cigarette, and Mr. 'George Cross aa Bertie Royollieu, being, particularly good. "Under Two Flags" will be repeated for the last time tonight, and on Monday will give place to "Camille." J. O. WILLIAMSON'S COMIC OPERA COMPANY. At the Bristol the box plans will be opened at 9 o'olook on Monday morning for the whole of J. C. Williamson's comic opera season, which begins on Wednesday next, when a revival of Gilbert and Sullivan's clever musical success "The Gondoliers," will be staged. Only three representations of the Venetian opera can be given, as on SaTurday next and the two following nights "The Yeomen of the Guard" will bo revived, and it will be followed by three performances of "lolanthe," three of "The Mikado," .two of "H.M.S. Pinafore," and two of "The Pirates of Penzance." So that the earliest arrivals shall have the first choice of seats on Monday morning, the management will have a staff of ushers in attendance from an early hour to form a queue. To the new generation the Gilbert and Sullivan operas will come as a revelation, as not for over eight years have they been presented here by a professional company'. Those who have witnessed previous representations of "The Gondoliers." and there are few old playgoers who have not pleasant memories of the pleasure they have derived from witnessing them, will he S lad to again associate themselves with ie popular numbers of the tuneful opera. A feature of the opera is the caclmca, with castagnet accompaniment in the second aot. There are over 160 travelling members of J. C. Williamson's company, including a chorus of 100 voices, and a complete grand opera, orchestra of speoially-selected musicians. The scenery for "The Gondoliers" has already arrived in charge of a large staff of meohanicß and electricians. HIS MAJESTY'S. A holiday crowd flocked to His Majesty's Theatre last night, where there is now being presented a vaudeville programme of unusual merit. Most sensational of all the items in the programme, in fact the most sensational animal act ever performed on the New Zealand vaudeville Btage is Mile. Schell's play with her lions. ' For tho rest there is music in plenty and comedy of varying classes and quality. There was a matinee yesterday afternoon, and another will be held to-day. THE KING'S THEATRE. "The Battle of the Sexes" is the ■chief story film at the King's Theatre this week. Most interesting news pictures are shown concerning the war with Turka.v —a number -of sceneß of happenings in the land of veiled ladies after war was declared. 'The other war pictures included in the "Pathe Gazotto" are likewise interesting. Scenery of _ great beauty and grandeur is shown in the picture whioh takes the traveller from Christiania to Bergen on a sight-seeing tour. There will do the usual matinee this afternoon. . PEOPLE'S PICTURE PALACE. A strange story is told in the photoplay "The Basilisk" at the People's Picture Palace just now. "The Basilisk" is the name taken by a mesmerist, who uses hisjnysterious powera to work Lis wiTT against his enemies. The picture tolls how : the man's evil power failed him when ho wished to use them for specially outrageous villainies. First, he seeks to ruin the girl, but in this fell design he fails, and then he wills her to kill his rival and her lover. Powerless to resist, the girl goes to do the awful deed, but is saved in the end bj tho sudden death of the hypnotist. "A First-Class Cook" is the name of. an ex. tremely funny story. On Monday "Trilby" will be shown ;for the first' time. ..'■'. EVERYBODY'S THEATRE, 'i "' Smart work was done by the producers to make possible the screening of Pavlova's Wellington Cup.so soon after the race. Most of tho film showed scenes on the lawn, and gave general views of the. crowd. The Keystone duo, Charles Chaplin and Roscoe Arbucklo, keep' the crowds amused in "The Rounders." There are other comedies scarcely less funny, as well as a selection of less frivolous subjects. The change of programme on Monday will be headed by.. a Vitagraph war drama, "Warfare in the Air," a story of modern war, in which a fleet of aeroplanes clash in grim fashion in mid-air. Gaston Mervale, the Australasian aotor, well known to theatre patrons through his connection with the J. C. Williamson Dramatic Company, • plays the part of the villain, County Zurith, an army aviator. A splendid Keystone, "The Masquoraders," featuring Charles Chaplain, the laughter comedian, disguised as a woman, will form part of a capital programme. ' THE EMPRESS THEATRE. "Through the Firing Line," the Regent Company's sensational war drama, together with the supporting series, will bo seen for the last time to-day and to-night at the Empress Theatre continuous pictures. Of distinctive merit also are "The War Day by Day," "The Topical'Budet," "Pimple's Trousers" (farce-comedy), and "The- Universal Weekly." The now programme on Monday will introduce the Regent Company's exciting war "feature" drama, "Facing the Enemey."
