'A terrible acoident occurred thiß morning on tho, Taringamutu Timber' Company's line W a, tram of open trucks and a covered "passenger oar, which runs from Taringamutu to Waituhi. A number of Maoris travelled in the open truck, the pakehas travelling in the covered car. Apparently the train ran off the line, as tho trucks overturned, killing a Maori child, badly injuring itsmothor, breaking the legs of two Maori women and the arm of another <
Fortunately, the pakehas escaped injury. ■Latest details show that two Native children died as a result of the accident.
The wife of Hira To Akau, named Rangieru To Aro, succumbed to injuries. ' A woman, Ngarama, is suffering from a broken arm and leg, and her daughter has a cut on the head. A boy, a sou of Harrison Topait, was cut on the head. ' 'The accident happened near tho Maori pah. The Natives preferred to travel in an open truck, although there was plenty of room in a covered car. A party of visitors from Taumarunui included Mr. and Mrs. Penning, who rendered first aid.
