BUST SHIPPING DAY. !:■: Captain Johnston, harbourmaster, and his istafi had an exceptionally busy day at Wellington yesterday. Between the hours of 4 a.m. and midmcrht no fower than 43 Bteamers entered and left the port—there' were 21 arrivals and .22 departures. These figures do not include the large number of vessels of all kinds' which had to be moved from one wharf to the other during tho day. If these "shifts" were taken into account the number, of vessels handled would no doubt constitute a record. .
WAIMANA ,AT PORT CHALMERS. Wiolmona, s.s., late H.M.N.Z.T. No. 12, which convoyed part of Now Zealand's Expeditionary Force to Egypt, arrived at Port Chalmers at 10 a.m. yesterday from Alexandria. After being dooked at the southern port the liner will load in New Zealand for Home on behalf of her owners, the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company. The Athenic, late H.M.N.Z.T, No. 11, is due at Auckland from Alexandria to-day. Sho will be docked at Auckland for cleaning and painting prior to loading for Home.
SHIPBUILDING ON THE CLYDE. . | While the figures for the shipbuilding industry on the Olyde for 1514 will ho materially below the record returns for 1913, there seems to be every prospect that the output for 1915 will startlingly eclipse the former record. The output for the eleven months ending November 30 (apart from Admiralty work) was 440,764 tons, a falling, off of 188.052 tons in comparison with the simitar period of last year. That the returna for 1915 will be very large is already seen from the fact that on account of the shortage of bottoms for the world's trade, orders for 200,000 tons in new cargo steamers were placed with Clyde shipbuilders in November alone. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. J. Harrison, wireleflß operator of the Pateena, has come ashore. Mr. Proseer,, late of the Paloona, has relieved Mr. Gardiner as chief officer of the Raramu. Captain Treurn, of the ooastal steamer Kotare. has returned to Dunedin from a holiday trip to the North Island. NOTIOE TO MASTERS. Captain G. G. Smith, Government Superintendent of Marine at Wellington, h(u received the following telegram: "Inform masters of vessels sailing north that lighted and whistling buoy at Lyttelton Heads wiTI be removed for cleaning and painting when weather permits, and will be replaced meanwhile by large can buoy painted tftfie." TWEa l/yttelton the barque Hazel Oraig will proceed to Bay of Islands to-morrow to load timber for Warrnambool. The MaSneanui was floated into dook at Port Chalmers on Monday. It is probable that Cfie Tahiti will leave the southern port in a day or so for Wellington. 58!5 Napier-owned steam trawler Countess arrived at Wellington yesterday morning with about 1500 bundles of fish. The fish had been caught round about Kapiti Island. While in port the Countess will be subjected to a thorough overhaul. Messrs. Richardson and Oo.'s new steamer Mako has arrived at Auokland on her first trip from Napier and Gisborne. She will be docked at the northern port. The New Zealand Shipping Compsuay'6 steamer Wbakatooe left Auckland for Wellington at 4.55 a.m. yesterday, and should arnvo in port to-morrow morning. She will fill up here and sail for London on Tuesday next. At present the 0. and D. liner Mimiro is landing New York cargo at Auckland. Wellington should bo reached on Monday, and the vessel will put out 1700 tons of cargo here before proceeding on to southern ports to complete. ■ On her way down the coast from Auokland the Makarini is calling at Gisborne and Napier. She is due at Wellington on Monday, and will discharge ICCO tons of London cargo here. Homeward loading will be oommenced at this port next week. To-day being a general holiday the Anchor Line's steamer Kaitoa will not visit Wellington. ' She will arrive here on Sunday as usual, however, and sail for Nelson and Motueka on Monday. Mefsrs. Johnston and Co., local agents for the P. and 0. Line, have been advised that the R.M.B. Moldavia will not arrive at Sydney from London till to-morrow-two flays late. Her New Zealand passengers and cargo should arrive at Wellington by the Moeraki on February 2. The Government training 6hip Amokura will not leave Wellington for Cook Strait Sounds till Monday of next weok.
