' o • The military concert which took place | in the Town Hall last night was in ' every way a pronounced success. Its . promoters, the Wellington Rifle Clubs . Tho Town Hall was crowded, and among '. those present were His _ Worship the , Mayor and other prominent citizens. , The programme was a varied and most , enjoyable one, and opened with. an ex- , position of physical drill by the Wel- • . lington City Senior Cadet Corps. Mr. ■ Courtenay V. Mohr followed with an ' appropriate vocal selection, "The Sergeant of tho Line." A san encore • number he rendered "Youth." The following tableau descriptive of the '. trenches at Mons was received enthusi- . astically. Miss Flora Shaw, one of the i champion dancers, gave a sword dance. , The favourite of the evening w,v Dn . Norman Hales, who rendered in char- , acteristic fashion that old favourite of • his "Wall! I Swan." He was vocifer- • ously encored. Miss • Flora_ Shaw danced in nimblo fashion ' an Irish jig, while the tableau "Jessie's Dream" evidently met with the appreci- ' ation of the audience. The concluding ' item of the concert "Hochl Hochl Tho \ Writing on the Walll" evoked much . amusement. In this Mr. R. Fleteher . and other well-known citizens took part. , During intervals a ram dubbed "Kaiser Bill" was put up to auction, and • was eventually secured for the Welling- ■ ton Zoo. A very audible pig was also ■ put un to auction, and was sold to Mr. | J. O'Brien. Mr. V. Jacobs, of George Thomas and Co., auctioned the animals. \ Mr. C. T. Cimino was secretary for . the concert, and Mr. Gilling stage man- . ager. , Mr. H. C. Blick was honorary ac- , companist. Miss Gladys Jackson helped materl- ■ ally to add to the proceeds of the con- > certs by selling sweets in the hall, and • by this means she collected, with the 1 aid of Miss Shaw, the sum of 355.
