The Howard-Smith Company's steamer Chronos has been launched on the Clyde. MEASUREMENT OF SHIPS. NEW JAPANESE REGULATIONS. The Imrerial Marine Society has, states the Japan "Daily Mail." been given permission by the Department of Communications to measure the tonnage of ships, on a contract, on the basis of tho revised regulations of measurement whicli were passed at the 34th session of the Imperial The society will dispatch erperti to ita local oflces at Osaka and Kobe, and will urge the shipowners to register the tonnage of their ships according to the new This revised regulation means much benefit to the shipowners. In comparison to Lloyd's syndicate, tho Japanese 103 tons were eoual to 85 tons of the syndicate, due to tho difference of the standard. But. as tho tonnage tax or port duty is levied in fr-reign countries according to the registered tonnage, and not the actual tonnage, the Japanese were losing something at every foreign port at which they called. The aim of the revised regulation is to protect shipowners from further losses. It went into force on Octobor 1. WIRRAL DUE TO-MORROW.
