CROSSBREDS ADVANCE. ByTolegroph—Preea Association—Copyright London, January 19. At tho wool salo3 9717 bales wore catalogued. There was an excellent selection of merinos and 462 bales of crossbreds. There was a splendid attendance, but tew Continental buyers. The tone.of the sale was moTe cheerful than that in December. Merinos and most combing sorts generally were 5 per cent, dearer; all ecoureds at par.- The Improved demand was Que to United States and Continental support on the Board of Trade's announcement that licenses would bo given to export to the United States and the Allies on a sworn declaration that they would not bo reshipped to enemy's country. All crossbreds were fully 6 per cent, dearer. BROKERS' PRIVATE MESSAGES. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency, Ltd., has received tho following cab'egram from their London office:— "Wool—Tone of market better. Greasy merino 5 per cent., greasy crossbred 75 per cent, higher. American operators aTe buying." ~ '_ ...' . W. and G.'Turnbnll and Co., Ltd, report having received the folowing cablegram from their London agents, undor date r.l January 19:—"Crossbreds advanced 7J per Cent." The Bank of New Zealand hafl received tho following cable advice from its London office, dated January 19:-"Thc sales have opened with strong competition. All crossbreds are 7J per cent. dear«r, and irood merino wool is par to 5 per cent, dearer; other descriptions are unchanged." Messrs. Levin and Co., Ltd., report that their London agents liavo cab'ed that tho January scries of wool sales opened with halfbreds firmer, best merinos 5 per cent, dearer, and crossbreds generally 71 per cent, dearer. HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. The Department of Agriculture, Industries, and Commerce has received the following cablegram from the High Commission for Now Zealand, dated London January 19, in regard to the opening of the coknial wool, sales:—"The wool sales have commenced with animated competition The market is strong. Americans arc buying merinos, tho export of which is now permitted. All crossbreds havo advanced one penny. Superior merinos have advanced one halfpenny. Medium and inferior merinos were firm at last quotations; 39,000 bales of New Zealand wool aro catalogued." Messrs. Murray, Roberts and Co., Ltd., have received a cablegram from their London frionds, Messrs. Sanderson, Murray and Co.. dated London, January 19, as follows.—"Sales opened, attendance good, competition good; merino combings, good, par to 5 per cent, advance; merino, other descriptions, par; crossbred, greasy. 10 per cent, to 15 per cent, advance; slipe, scoured, 5 per cent, to 7» per cent, advance." Messrs. Johnston and Co., Ltd., are In receipt of the following cablegram from their London agents-.—"The January sales opened to-day. There- was a large attendance of buyers, and keen competition. Medium and ■ coarse crossbreds advanced 10 per cent.; fine remained unchanged." An expected arrival inport from Brisbane to-day is the Now Zealand Shipping Coi's W-iiniatc. Who will commence loading hero anil after visiting other coastal ports will sail finally from Auckland for Home. A cable received from Durban states that tho New Zealand Shipping Co.'s Opawn (miller charter to the V. & S. Line) arrived there on January 8 enroute from Australian ports to London and Liverpool,
