FIERCE HURRICANE AT THE ISLANDS
DESTRUCTION'TO SAMOAN PLANTATIONS. Suva, January 20. The Tofua, which arrived at Levuka from Samoa at daylight, encountered a hurricane '420 miles north of Levuka on Monday morning. The barometer fell from 29 to 18. The ' wind blew north-north-east and south-east, indicating that the disturbance was travelling eastward. (Rec. January 20, 6.12 p.m.) Suva, January 20. The hurricane swept Samoa on Monday, the cocoa and coconut plantations being badly damaged.
