The Prime Minister has been advised by oablegram that Mr. R. H. Marryatt, formerly of Wellington, has boon appointed Lieutenant in the Fifth Reserve Battalion. Mr. Marryatt left for London a few months ago. His Honour Mr. Justice Buchanan and Miss Buohanan, of Adelaide, have arrived in Wellington to undertake a fairly comprehensive tour of the Dominion. They propose visiting the southern lakes first of all and afterwards working north to Rotorua. Mr. L. A. B. Wade, Irrigation Commissioner for New South Wales, brother of Mr. 0. G. Wade, ex-Premier and now Leader of the Opposition in tho State Assemoly, died last week. Mr. Lawrie, stationmaster at Papanui, has received instructions from headquarters to hold himself in readiness for transfer to Petone. Mr. Lawrie haa held his present position for eight years. Mr. F. Mander, M.P, for Marsden, is at present in Wellington. Mr. Martin Kennedy, of Wellington, returned to Auckland on Monday from a brief trip through the North Auckland district. Accompanied by Miss Kennedy, he arrived back in Wellington yesterday, Mr. G. H. Chirnside, of Sydney, a lyell-known Australian sportsman and a frequent visitor to New Zealand, arrived in Auckland by the Riverina. Mr. Chirnside went on to Rotorua on. a fishing excursion, Mr. J. A. Nash, Mayor of Palmerston North, who had been on a visit to Auckland, to take part in the bowling tournament, returned to Palmerson North on Tuesday. Mr. A. D. Campbell, who makes an annual trip from England to New Zea-. land for the fishing, is now at Rotorua. The Rev. F." Stubbs, F.R.G.S., was a pasaenger for Auckland by the Riverina on Monday. Ten years ago Mr. Stubbs relinquished,' on account of ill-health, ' bis position as Presbyterian minister at I Rotorua. He has since travelled extensively, contributing articles to many journals in various parts of the world. When in India ha received the Durbar medal, and a more recent honour was his election as a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society Before resuming his travels abroad, Mr. Stubbs intends to visit Rotorua, where he has many frjends. Sergeant Till, of the local Police Force, has left for Auckland on transfer. His place here will be taken by Sergeant Willcox, of Pukekohe. Mr. T. H. Davey, formerly member for Christchurch East, is at. present visiting Wellington. . Mr. Johu Swinson, of Wellington, who was seriously injured in the train smash near Mercer in May last, is still in the Hamilton Hospital. It is reported that his condition is improving. Mr. Harold Vincent Rowe, son of Mr. T. W. Rowe, a Christchurch solicitor (and at one time public librarian in Wellington), has been awarded a research scholarship at Canterbury College, the' value of which is £100 per annum for two years. Mr. Rowe ia in his twenty-first year, and received his early education at the Clyde Quay School, Wellington, and the East Christohurch School. Ee entered Canterbury College in 1912, and gained an exhibition in ohemistry the following yearHe completed his B.A. degree and gained a Haydon Prize in chemistry at Canterbury College and a senior university scholarship in chemistry. Mr. Rowe recently-sat for his M.A. degree. Dr. D. M. Y. Somerville, recently appointed professor of pure and applied mathematics-at Victona'.Gollege, is sailing for New Zealand by the Orontes, leaving England on January 29. Mr. Lawrence Hanlon, of the Thornaon,Railway Station, has been promoted to the position of stationmaster on the Nelson section. Mr. Brasch, acting-secretary of the National Dairy Association, is at present visiting the Wairarapa. He will return to Wellington this week. Mr. B. M. Wilson, of the Tourist Department, is travelling the South Island. Advice was received yesterday to the eflect that Major A. A. Corrigan had left Canada for New Zealand, via iAustralia. _ Major Corrigan has been in service in Belgium, and participated in the defence of Nieuport. Roberts, the well-known athlete who is being" married at an early date! Mr. T. Ronayne, 1.5.0., the president i of the olub, in making the presentation, referred to the excellent swimming rel cord hold by Mr. Roberts, mentioning that he had won the 100 yards championship of New Zealand, that he had' been a consistent representative of the club in the contests for the Walker and Hall Cup, and that he was the only member of the club who had twice won | the Ward Cup, which is awarded to the swimmer who 6cores the highest number of points in all club races hold during a'season. Mr. D. Joslin, the oldest member of the 'dub, and the only lifemember, in adding his good wishes to those of Mr. Ronayne, referred enthusiastically, to Mr. Roberts's career as a swimmer 6ince he first joined'the club some seventeen years ago, and specially mentionedhow pleased the members of the club (including the loser) had been when, as a youth of 17 years, he met and defeated the then champion of the club, Mr. J. Hamilton, who, until then, proved to be invincible. ' Mr. Roberts thanked the president and members of the club for their gift, and in wishing the olub good luck in the future, recalled the many happy times he had put in with the boys of the club. Mr. O. B. Sinton, an Auckland swimmer, who is in camp at Trentham, was present with some other members of the Expeditionary Force, and in proposing their health, Mr. H. Blick referred to the great contest which took place at the last ohampionship meeting in Wellington between a team of hve swimmers representing Wellington (of which Mr. Fred. Roberts was a member) and a similar team representing Auckland, from which the southern team emerged victorious.
