Among the appointments to the Terlitorial Force, just issued in, Christchurch, is the following:—Lieut.-Col, the Hon. Robert Heaton Rhodes, T.D., M.P., to command a mounted rifles brigade for a period of one .year. .■■■Mr. J. H. Williams, formerly well known m New Zealand shipping circles, died at hid residence; 22 Hobson Street, at 9 a.m. on Monday. Mr. Williams wag the only son of Mrs. M. A. Williams, and for many years was connectaa lyith his late father's business subsequently acquiring the local tug and ferry service, which he conducted for a number of years, and eventually formed th o Wellington Steam Ferry Co., which company, under his personal direction, developed the Day's Bay Estate into a popular resort. Mr. Williams had lived in retirement for some years past.; He leaves a.widow and one Son and three daughters. .Mr. Heifry E. White, the well-known the&trs architectj who has been tesident in Sydney during the past year, arrived here by.the Manuka yesterday. He was accompanied by Mrs. and the two Masters White. Mr. E. E. Gillon, assistant engineer and workshops manager at the Addington Railway Workshops, has been transferred to the position of locomotive engineer on the Wellington section of the railways. He will be succeeded by Mr. J. Carson, of Hillside, Dunedin, Mr. Behrend Van Staveren arrived back from a trip to Australia yesterday by the Manuka. Mr. H. J. H. Madame Boeufve, the wife of a former French Consul in New Zealand, and who is ail Irishwoman by birth, has. been advised that her brother, Colonel Sydney Jameson, formerly of the Seaforth ■ Highlanders, and who commanded the First Army Corps under General Haig at the battle of Mons, haß been honoured by the French Government with the decoration of Offioer. of the Legion of Honour for gallantry in the field. Madame Boeufve's other brother, Major ,Eustace Jameson, a retired officer of the 20th Hussars, 60 years of age, has also rejoined tho colours L and has been "given the command of a regiment. He has three sons on active service—two in the . Army and one in the Navy. The. sole male representative of the family in New Zealand'is Mr. Alio Boeufve, who is in Mr. G. H. Fell's office./ Mr. Boeufve, who speaks French and German just as fluently as he- does English, is endeavouring to obtain a minor commission as interpreter with the New Zealand Expeditionary Foree. Mr. Boeufve has no fewer than eleven relatives at' the froilt; lighting either with the French or English foices, and is anxious to make the number the round dozen.
