' ' For yesterdays track gallops at Tren- _ tham .the weather was fine, and some in- ■> teresting work was witnessed. The out- , sido of the course proper was open .for ' fast wort and the inner grass gallop J and the tan were also available, Prac- ( tically all the horses sent on time-making ( missions made use' of the first-named r track. Jem, working alone, core Ted six furlongs in lmin. 19 2-ssec., but did not c finish by any means well. t . The Cup fancy, Indigo, finished ahead t of Fair Rosamond at the end of a mile, i which was timed at lmin. 13see. Ogier, | who started with the two named, took lmin. 47 2-ssec. to complete the journey. s E. J. Mason's two-year-olds, Sutala and • Nones, were the first horses to be sent , along the' new half-mile track. They . finished together, taking 52sec. to cover ' the distance. . ) Alces and another were abreast at tho end of four furlongs, the time being 52 3-ssec. Pavlova jumped away at the mile-post, and was brought home over the last four furlongs by Goldstream. When the judge's box was reached Goldstream was a couple of lengths ahead of Pavlova, who did not finish brilliantly, though the time for the mile (lmin. 43sec.) was good. , Arlington, who is partial to t.he firm going, easily defeated Killaloo over six 1 furlongs, run in lmin. 19 3-ssec. < Scotch Melody was doing her best to j cover five furlongs in lmin. 5 3-ssec., 1 Honesty traversing the same distance in 1 lmin. ssec. ... ] Beldams accomplished one of the best performances of the morning by getting i to the end of six furlongs in lmin. 18 j l-ssec. without any great effort. j Belasco, galloping with something in < reserve, was timed to run four furlongs in 55see. Bnnlcsia, alone, left seven furlongs behind in lmin. 33sec. . Quite the most attractive gallop of the , morning was that registered by Croesus, ; who defeated Biineter by four lengths over five'furlongs, covered in lmin. 3sec. j In the Trial Plate to-morrow Croesus is . to be ridden by the Auckland horseman, 1 B. Deeley. < Sicily, Marco Bello, and Gold Foil ran four furlongs together in 51sec.r-good time • for the distance. St. Elran, Empmdor, and Marshal ■ MDonald galloped a complete circuit in company. St. finished ■ slightly ahead of the other pair, Marshal M'Donald cutting off a lot of ground at the Inst turn to keep up with his associates. The time for the full distance was 2min. 16 l-ssec., the last mile having taken lmin. 46sec. Peg easily accounted for Chudic over six furlongs, run in lmin. 18 4-ssec. Football was too good for Dribble over fivo furlongs, the winner's time being lmin. 6scc. ' . Stepney nnd Gold Soult finished together at tho en/1 of f<rur furlongs run in 52sec. Glenroy and Crown Pearl did a nice wf.rking gallop over five furlongs. ' Wisebird, who is one of the fancied candidates for the Telegraph Handicap, ran four furlongs in 52 l-ssec., having Court Martial for a companion. Down left four furlongs behind in 54scn, Autumnus, looking remarkably well, moved freely in a three-furlong 6print. lUreliau and Briar Patch, working inside the rails, galloped the last three of four furlongs in 38sec. Useful tasks were also performed by th-J following horses, many of whom worked on the tanKilrain, Chakwana, Ladoga, - Sea Pink, ICooya, Roumania, Happiness, Fabri&off, Flower o' the West, Bold Stroke, Dinner Gong, Try Hard, Mount Victoria, Downham, Recorder, Harlequin, Flying Spark, -Fashion Plate, ar.d Rongora. Yesterday's arrivals included Bertrada, Sin apis, Austin, Interlude, and Ararat. The horses owned by the late Mr. H. Hedge have been scratched for all engagements at ithe meeting. . Square Deal, in 'charge of J. Farmer, anived at headquarters yesterday. He will bo a runner in tho open wolter on Wednesday; . and will be ridden by S. Reid. • It has been definitely decided that the new straight, oourse will be used for the 6print events at Trentham on Cup day, J. Beale will ride FabrikofF and Flower o' the West in their Trentham engagements. ' It is mmoured that Gladiole will not be a starter at Trentham. Starter C. O'Connor arrived by itho Main Trunk express yesterday, and will be officiating at Tronth&m this week. Merry Roe has gone wrong, and ha? been struck out of the Waterloo Stakes. Her stable companion Self has been scratched for tho Cup. H. Cutts has six horses at Trentham, viz., Wisebird, Autumnus, -Flying Start, Harlequin, l Bold Stroke, and , Courtmartial. R. O'DoanelUs team includes • Recorder, Dinner Gong, and Sanci. ; A correspondo.it, "Student," writes;— 1 "You and the other papers are always announcing what a favourite Indigo is, aud some of you have insinuated that he is well treated in the Wellington Cup. Now, as a matter of fact, he is badly j treated, and the wonder is that his owner ! is allowing him to start. If ho is well treated, what weight would have been required to stop Reputation, our best three- ' year-old? Now, follow me. Bidwill's colt gave Indigo 121b., and ate him up in tie ' Hawke's Bay Guineas. Now allow -the. s chestnut ?lb. for the beating—a very l small allowance, I think—and if Indigo is well treated in the Wellington Cap, Reputation would .lie in the same category if he carried 9st. 41b. This, of course, is but of all reason. The fact is ' Toil are all going crazy over the New " Zealand Cup running. This was one of 1 the most mixed /up and worst run races ; possible to imagiae. It took four seconds , longer than usual to rum, and was altoi pettier a boshed up affair. Look' at Guidt ing Way, the fourth horse. Has he ever 3 been prominent in a race since,'-though ~ he has been at second-class meetings? ' . . . What did Indigo do after deadI heating in the Cup? Ran third in the Jockey Club Handicap, with 7st. 111b., to ' two. proved good ones (?) like John Bar- " leycorn, 7st. 21b., and Rinaldo, 7st. 131b. • The latter is a fine one to be chasing, 1 1 - don't think. He was made favourite in 3 the Fcndalton Handicap oil the last day J of tiie same meeting, and finished out of y a place. "This brings,us back to Indigo, who was |i beaten with 7st. illb. in a. mile, and now 6 gets 7st. 131b. in a.mile and a half. Has he ever won a weight-for-age race that tho han-iicapper is justified in awarding r him two pounds above weight for age in ' a handicap? "In my opinion, tho blot of the handiII cap is ICooya.' She is always running '> races, and the handicappers do not seem P to wake up to her. Ladcga is another horse wonderfully well in. Look at his Great Autumn and Thompson Handicap, if form last year."
