LEAKS DISCOVERED. Quito unexpectedly the little steamer Awaroa-, which clearod Wellington for Mel* boiirno on Friday evening, returned to pOTt shortly aftor noon yesterday. The Awaroa is well known in Wellington Uo* r * j;our afl a ferry boat, and prior to btfing purchased by the Harbour Ferries Company was employed in the Wairoa lUver passenger service. About Christinas time she was purchased by Mr. .1. Black, of. Melbourne,.for tho ilelboiuno baye trade. Boon after leaving Wellington last irjday evening the Awaroa ran into heavy weather and as some water had found ite way inside tho vessel it was decided to put back to port. At the timo the Awaroa was about 60 miles we6t of Curious Cliff, which point is on the Weetport aide of Farewell Spit. The loak was by no means serious, but it was thought better to return. On investigation, it was fauna that owing to tho Awaroa. having been laid up at Wellington for some time, and being a wooden vesoel, flhe had become sun-dried above tho water-line in the forward -part. INDBAPTJRA'S BIG HEAT BHJPKENT* Leaving Wellington for London yesterday afternoon tho Commonwealth ana Dominion Line's steamer Indxapura (Messrs Bannatyne and Co., agents), took away an exceptionally large quantity of frozen produce from various Now Zealand ports. The total meat shipment from New Zeoland equalled 135,891 carcasses of mutton and lamb. It was made up as follows:-- t 122,512 carcasses lamb, 32,971 carcasses mutr ton, 6825 quarters beef, 110 bag 6 meats, 275 crates kidneys. TOW STEAMER MAKO. Messrs. Richardson and Co/s new steamer Mako arrived at Napier from Home, via Edithburg and Westport, on Friday jflflt. Sho will be employed in the Napier-Ea-st Coast bays-Auckland service. The vessel, which is thoroughly up to date, has been specially built for the rapidly expanding trade of Messrs. Richardson and Co., ana i 6 registered as 100 A 1 ait _ Lloyd 8. Her horse-power iB SCO, and nine knots per hour will be easily maintained at 400 revolutions per minute. WIRRAL AT AUCKLAND. The local office of the New Zealand Shipping Company has been advised that the chartered steamer Witto! arrived at Auckland from Montroal, via way ports, at 1 p.m. yesterday. She iB due at Wellington on January 22, and. after landing the looal portion of her cargo will proceed on to Lyttelton and Duncdin to complete. The Wirral has been fixed to load in INew Zealand, and will be dispatched finally from Wellington for London about February 10. TRAINING SHIP APARIHA'B CADETS. As an additional eight cadetß will complete their training within the next few weeks, and will bo leaving the "Onion Company's training steamer Aparima to sit for their examinations as junior officers in tho company's service, there will be several vacancies, for which applications are now being received.. Successful applicants will be able' to join the Aparima before she leaves New Zealand early m February. It is interesting, to note that up to the present under the' Union Company's training scheme some 30 officers have qualified, for, and are holding, responsible positions in the company's eervice . The Now Zealand Shipping Company's Whakatane, which is due in port from Auckland next Saturday, will sail from here for London on January 26. At 5 p.m. to-morrow R.M.S. Remuera will leave Wellington for Lyttelton. After completing discharge she will load at Lyttelton and Timaru. returning to Wellington in timo to sail for Home on February 11. Duo at Wellington from Sydney either tomorrow or Thursday, the C. and t D. Line's steamer Niwaru will commence' her New Zealand loading at this port for Home. According to advices received by tho looal ollleo of tho New Zealand Shipping Company the chartered steamer Borderdale left St. John on January 10 for Welling, ton, via Australian ports and Auckland. Betubing of the Mapourika's boilers will be completed in time for the vessel to leave Wellington for New Plymouth and Wostport at 5 p.m. to-morrow. The Pai teona will call at Picton en route from Nelson to Wellington to-day. . The Government steamer Tutanekai is at present ■ occupying tho Wellington Patent Slip. The Anchor Line's Alexander will bo taken up on the cradle to-day, andthe 'same company's Kennedy .on Thursday. Discharge of the local portion. of tho Ardgarry s Now York caTgo is expected to lie completed in timo for her to leave for southern ports to-day. Early yesterday morning the Government steamer Hincmoa left Wellington for Coolt Strait lighthouses and Kahurangi Point light. On account of unfavourable weather, however, a landing could not be effected at Cape.. Palliscr, so tho vessel proceeded on to Karori If oak. She is expected to bo absent from Wellington for over a week. It will bo Friday or Saturday of this week before tho F. and 8. liner El Cordobes will be ablo to get away from Wellington for tho south. Tho local office of the company state that thoro is a congestion of cargo in tho shells. Before 'proceeding on to southorn ports at 5 p.m. to-<lay the Monowal will land 390 tons of northern cargo at Wellington. Telegraphio advico received from Greymouth yesterday announced tho arrival of tho Araliura, at 9 a.m., from Wellington, via way ports. Sho was to have left on tho -return trip at 10 p.m., in which ca=o departure will bo taken from Westport for Nelson, Picton, and Wellington at 11 a.m. to-day. The Taviuni is scheduled to leavo Auckland for tho South Sea, lalonds to-day. On inquiry at, the local office of tho New Zealand Shipping Company yesterday, a reporter was informed, that tho chartered steamer Somerset, which has relieved tho Huanehu, will arrive nt Wellington from Napier to-morrow. She will fill up here, and be dispatched for London at daybreak on Friday next. After picking up what, cargo is offering the New Zealand Shipping Company s Waimalo will sail on January 26 from Wellington for Napier, Tokomimi Bay, Auckland, anri London.
