LOG & GRASS FIRE

SEVERE DAMAGE IN THE WAIRARAPA. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Mastcrton, January 18. Reports have reached here of extensive log and grass fires in the Pongaroa district, caused by the furious gale which raged on Sunday night and today. Many miles of fencing and numerous outbuildings are reported to have been destroyed, and settlers are fighting to save their homes. Messrs. Gardiner and Yeoman's sawmill has gone, and other buildings are in imminent danger. Tho gale is said to be the most severe ever experienced in the district.
