.—A i . FIGURES FROM LABOUR BUREAU. The reports, made by the Wellington ibranch-of the Department of Labour ;since the outbreak of war have been • very encouraging. December's report Was a : particularly good one; and this ''month again the news is cheering. ; Tho Departmental authorities stated yesterday that the figures to hand from [ the city branch indicate that the position as to employment in the city is Very satisfactory. Last week in Wellington ,one hundred men applied' to ; .iho Labour Bureau for work. Twentyi 'jis of these were married, and seventy.four single. Tho Department found /work for eighty-three of the applicants. (Kfty-four were sent to private employr ment, and twenty-nino woro put on to : public works. That left the bureau with the very ;Small surplus of seventeen applicants out of work. In every ono of the seventeen cases the men were not easy to place, as they were unable to do heavy 'work. The majority of the applicants for employment were prepared to tako up general work, even if it was of a 1 heavy nature, and moat of them were ' capable of doing heavy labour. Road ; wor k and bushfelling were among the , lines they wore willing to follow, i During tho-week the Department placed a few skilled workers (carpentersand painters). . All tho farm hands available (only four) practically found situations awaitthem.
