Present- indications are that the prospects of the recent conference between the Northern Colliery proprietors and the Miners' Federation settling the afternoon shift trouble are not bright, The Kurri Kurri miners have turned down the employers' offer of increased pay for the afternoon shift. The miners' executive is approaching the proprietors with a view to a further conference. It appears, however, that another deadlock is approaching, the men being determined to abolish the afternoon shift, while.the proprietors are unanimous regarding its con-, tinuanee. The Western miners are suffering from) lack of work. Many men are being dismissed. -. •» ■ The South Coast''Miners' Delegate Board is considering the position with regard to the South Coast mines. It is stated that no definite terms for asettlement have been offered. The date of the conference with regard to surface hands has.been fixed for January 22. The conference will not meet if any of the 'mineß are idle owing to industrial, troubles. It has been decided that in future all grievances must be placed in the hands.of the executive before drastic action is taken. PROPRrETORS' PROPOSALB REFUSED. Sydney, January 16. All the five lodges concerned in tha afternoon shift dispute have definitely refused the proprietors' proposals.
