HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT The High Commissioner, under date London, January 15, 7.45 p.m., Teports ■as follows:— > . ■ Paris reports that near Lombaertzyde progress was made. North of Arras a brilliant attack was made by the Zouaves, who carried with the>\bayonet the enemy's position near the Arras-Lille Toad. ■ In tho same region the enemy's batteries were silenced, two guns were \vrecked, and an ammunition depot exploded and the works were destroyed. North-east of Soissons the Germans entered Saint Paul, but it was retaken immediately. In the Yosges, south of Benones, the Germans were repulsed atfer a lively infantry fight. Their barbed-wire entanglements and trenches were filled with dead.. Loudon, January 16, 6.30 p.m.:— "Paris reports that at Notre Dame de iLorette, near Carency, the enemy reoccupied a portion of the trenches which they lost on Thursday. At Bla'gny, jiow our progress is continued.
An energetic attack, following a violent bombardment at Laboiselle, was repulsed. In the region of Soissons the Allies' artillery dispersed an assembling regiment, exploding the euemy's battery, and demolishing one work. A stubborn attack on the Allies' trenches Jat Flirey completely failed. ■ The Germans were forced to evacuate a crest [north of Clergy (cast of Pont-a-Mous-Bon). THE ARREST OF CARDINAL MERCIER .WAS THE INCIDENT GRAVE? London, January 15. The "Daily Mail," correcting the "Daily Telegraph," says: "The Popo does not consider, this a grave incident. Anyway,'it is closed."A message published on Saturday morning—printed as received—read as follows:—"The "Daily Telegraph's" Havre- correspondent states that the Pope s reply' to King Albert was most cordial, and stated that he did not regard the Cardinal Mercier incident as grave, and considered it closed." If S e '? alJ .T Mail" message is correct, then the 'Daily paragraph obviously should have read that His ™» (SS regarded tho matter as grave; it the 'Telegraph" paragraph is correct then the negative in th& "Daily Mail . paragraph should not be there. At all events, as tho "Daily Mail" remarks, the-matter is closed.
