Hesione (Pallas-Antigone), who scored, in the Wairio Cup, was unsuccessful in I tho same evont last year. The winner has proved 'ft most profitable speculation for Mr. C. J. Hcywood, who recently acquired her. There, were several falls at tho Wairio Meeting this week, and out of the ten runners in tho Aparima Stoeplechaso only threo finished tbo course. All the riders escaped injury except H. Cokcr, who was badly shaken when Te Tua came, down. 1 After galloping with Fabrikoff on tho grass at Eiccarton, Findhorn was found to be very sore, and his engagements at Treiitham have beon cancelled. Killaloo, in charge of W. J. Porter, arrived from tho south yesterday morning. S, Waddell and G. Price with their teams are expected to arrive at headquarters on Monday next. Square Deal has been accepted for both at Poston and Trontham. He will probably go to tho former placo, and will bo ridden in the .Cup by W. Adams. Big Blast is very sore in front, and is an unlikely starter at the Troptham Meeting. Byron has been working exceptionally well on tho trucks at Awapuui, and early this week he badly defeated Ber. trada in a gallop over a mile. R. Gooseman is now training Mr. G. P. Donnelly's two-year-old, Gril Foil. L. Wilson is to ride Kilrain in the Wellington Cup, and R. Berry will steer Sinapis, whilo 11. Young will be on Pavlova. As usual Bimetcr refuses to work on tho tracks, but yesterday morning R. ,T. Mason, mounted on a hack, got behind him with a stockwhip, and the black son of Maltster galloped five furlongs and did it well. Included amongst tho winners at Wairio on Wednesday was Varanian (Vkrco— .
Ngaio), who scored in tho Maiden Plat®. T£o chestnut gelding, who is ther to tho Winter Cup winner, Parky.was ridden by J. Olsen, who also had the mounts on two other winners; Be. dowa and Martian Maid. . . The Australian steeplechaser Bullawarra, who was sent to England t« prepare - for the'.Liverpool Grand .National Steeplechase, made his first appearance in the Valentine • Steeplechase ,at Liverpool on November 14. He did not appear to be much fancied, however' ' (says the "Sportsman"), and, after jumping "big," finished last of the five runners. . After a season, at the 6tud the Soult horse Waimangu is to be given another opportunity to win fame on ! the racecourse (says "'Whalebone" in the Auckland "Star"), and is now working' again tft Ellevslie under the supervision of his old mentor,-G. Absolum. Try Fluke, who won two. races at the Trentham Winter Meeting ,Jast July, is again in • active commission .at Ellerslie uider P. Sl'Manemin.. The little'_'blnck horse has been moving freely in his work, pointing to the fact that all ill'.effects of his recent lameness havo'beeu thrown off during tho spoil in the paddock. ' la Reina has thrown off the soreness sho displayed when racing' on tho final day of tho Ellorslie meeting, and she should be got back to sound form for- the Takapuna Cap. Old Loch Fyne, tho Great Northern end Winter Steeplecha6o hero, has turned up again at Ellevslie,' where ho is boing used a$ a hack.
