—-—iAN OLD MAN IN TROUBLE POLICE OASES. Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., presided over a sitting of the police business of the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning. An old and disreputable-looking man named James Rhodes hobbled into tho dock to answer a charge of being an incorrigible rogue. He pleaded guilty to the charge and asked to be committed to the Ohiro Home. He said he was 77 years old. Inspector Hendrey said that accused had been making tbe Thorndon tramway shed liis night abode for some woeks past, so that the shed was filthy by now. Accused had been ooiivicted for vagrancy a largo number of times. The Magistrate sent him to gaol for 12 months. Accused appeared to hardly comprehend his sentence and his tremulous and reiterated "what did he say" could be heard even after he had left the Court. OTHER CASES. James M'Sweeney, who had been arrested for drunkenness on Januar.y 8, 9, and 12, again appeared on a similar charge yesterday, and was also charged with resisting Constable Revell. "The resistance was very determined and fierce," remarked Inspector Hendrey. M'Sweeney was fined £2 or 14 days' imprisonment on each charge, the sentences to be cumulative. For drunkenness Joseph Cowan and Alexander Churchman were each fined £2 or seven days' gaol, and Samuel Doherty fined 10s. or 48 hours' imprisonA first offender was convioted and discharged. . CIVIL OASES. Malicious and cruelly beating stock - and maliciously allowing same to be at , larp:e were alleged against defendent in a civil dispute heard before Mr. D. G. . A. Cooper, S.M., in the Magistrate's , Court yesterday. Tlie parties to the , case were Maurice Joseph Hasler, dairyi man, of Island Bay, plaintiff, and'Er- ; nest E.
