According to the London "Shipping World" Messrs. Fleming and Ferguson, weP-known Scottish shipbuilders, have received an order from the Wonganui Harbour Board, for the construction of a twinscrew self-discharging hopper dredge. The port of Wanganni is at present undergoing extensive improvements, but there is urgent need for the n?w dredge in order that a pronounced forward step may be taken in connection with the work. Unfortunately the building of the vessel has been retarded on account of the war. It is expected that big steamers will he a.ble to berth at, Pastlecliff in«ide two years from the time the new dredge arrives. On account of the; Mapourika's trip from Wellington to Picton being abandoned on Monday next tho Potecna will sail from this port for Picton and Nelson at 5 p.m. on that. day. As the Orient liner Orvieto has been renuisit.ioncd for other ' purposes R.M.S. Orontes has been fixed to leave Sydney for London on April 7 instead of March 24. Of late the Wcllineton Patent Slip Co. hon been exceptionally busy in overhauling steamers. The is due hero to-morrow from Nelson for survey, and the same company's Kennedy is due in port, from Puponga on Wednesday for the same purpose. It is announced that the Union Company's Corinna will arrive back at. Wellington from the south on January 20. Departure will be taken for Picton. Nelson. and Onehunga tho same day. For tho purpose of. commencing Homeward loading t.ho 0. and D. liner Niwaru is due at Wellington from Sydney on January 21. She will leave here for Wan"<inni and other New Zealand ports on January 24. The Niwaru is expected to 1 clear New Zealand for Home about tho middle of February. Horfieward loading will be commenced at Wellington by the New Zealand Shipping Company's Waimate on or about January 20 The vessel in'coming From Brisbane, and after loading at other New Zealand ports will sail from Auckland for London about February 2. Jn order to take the February loading berth in New Zealand, the Otaki is duo in these waters about February 3. Departure will be taken for Home towards the end of the month. After having picked up cargo at various New Zealand ports, the New Zealand' Shinpin"- Cpmranv's Whakatane is expected to leave Wellington for London about January 23.
