It is supposed to bo a precautionary measure against tho possibility of a British attack. LORD CHARLES BERESFORD ON THE SUBMARINE PERIL. (Rec, January 14; 9.45 p.m.) .i* London, January 14. , Lord Charles Beresford, in a letter to the Press, says that th© British battleship Formidable was lost under conditions tho repetition of which after the loss of tho Aboukir and the Cressey he had thought would have been impossible. In both cases the ships were sent to waters infested by submarines, and without the protection of destroyers. ' The efficacy of such protection, he adds, is' shown in the fact that the enemy's submarines were unable to injure the British squadron, off the Belgian coast. It was unpardonable that officers and crews should be so exposed.
