Remuera, R.M.8., of the New Zealand Shipping Company's fleet,, arrived in the stream at Wellington, from London, via Cape Town and Hobart, at 9.10 a.m. yesterday; Pratique ha.ving been granted by the Port Health Officer, the liner berthe? at .the King's Wharf at 11.25 a.m. Mr. E. H. Holland, second officer, has supplied the following official report of the ftcmuera'6 long journey:—The 6teamer embarked passengers at . Gravesend on Friday, November 27, and proceeded down river as far as ■ war regulations permitted the same evening, putting to sea the following morning. Unsettled weather, with strong southwest winds and rough seas was experienced crossing the bay and down the Spanish coast until within 500 miles of Teneriffe, when wind moderated and fine weather prevailed til] arrival on December 4. After replenishing her bunkers, the Remuera took departure from Teneriffe at 10.30 p.m. the 6ame evening, en route.for Cape Town. Fine weather prevailed throughout the passage, the south-east trades being particularly light. The Equator was crossed on Thursday, December 6, and the South African port reached on Saturday, December 19. The vessel was delayed at this port owing to labour being required for troopships which were fitting out for German West Africa. After taking in bunker coal and embarking passengers, departure ,was taken for Hobart at 8 the following evening. The passage across the Southern Ocean proved particularly fine. Light westerly winds were experienced throughout. Two small icebergs were sighted. Hobart was • reached on the morning of January 8, and after discharging 500 tons of general cargo, departure was taken for Wellington at 6 the following morning. Fine weather, with moderate westerly and N.W. winds, with slight seas were experienced crossing the Tasman Sea, and the vessel arrived at Wellington as above. The Remuera will leavo Woflington for Lyttelton on January 21. Captain H. E. Greenstreet is still in command of the Remuera, and has the following officers associated with him:—Chief, Mr. H. J. Greenland, who is going to the front. STEAMER SERVICE CHANGES. Several steamer service changes ere announced ay the Union Company. On arrival at Dunedin from Melbourne and Hobaft on Thursday, January 21, tho Warrimoo will withdraw from the intercolonial service. The Paloona, which has been engaged in the East Coast running, will leave Dunedin for Lyttelton, Wellington, Hobart, and Melbourne on January 21, The Maheno, which has been laid up at Sydney for a week or two, will resume running from that port to Auckland on Wednesday, January 20. In connection with the East Coast service, the Paloona, which i 6 due at Wellington from northern ports to-morrow, will proceed to Dunedin as usual, and will withdraw at that port to take up the Wnrrimoo's running. Arrangements have been made for the Tarawera (which is at present laid up at Port Chalmers) to take up the Paloona's running. She will leavo Dunedin for northern ports on January 19. On arrival at Wellington from Calcutta, via southern ports, early this morning the big cargo carrier Aparima will withdraw from the Calcutta service pro tcm. Her place will be taken by the Waihora, which lwis been fixed to load coal at Newcastle towards the end of the present month, for Singapore. Subsequently the Waihora will take the March loading berth at Calcutta fur New Zealand ports. She will make calls at Singapore and Samaraiig en route to. theso waters. RICHARDSON'S NEW STEAMER. Messrs. Richardson and Company's new =tcamor Mako is due at Napier from Edithburg; South Australia, any time now, with a full load of gypsum and salt. The Mako was recently built on tho Clydo for Messrs. 'Richardson and Company, and she is a little larger than tho Ripple, having a capacity for 600 tons of cargo. She will make fortnightly nine between the ports mentioned, and will take cargo for ports south of Opotiki. She will he followed by the Kahu, and if there ifl any cargo that cannot be landed from the Mako owing to stress of weather, it will be transhipped at Gisborne, and brought to ite destination by the Kahu, which will only run between Gisborne and Auckland, calling at the various ports. The Mako has ■ accommodation for . 25 passengers. Meantime the Ripple will maintain the Wellington-Napier-East Coast bays-Gisborije service. A wireless message received, from, the Chatham Islands late last night stated that tho steamer Himitangi had left Waitangi, laden with sheep and wool for Lyttelton. She is due at the southern port on Saturday, and will tail for the Chatham Islands again at 5 p.m. on Monday next. From London, via Australian porte, the C. and D. liner Makarini arrived at Auckland at 3 p.m. yesterday. The vessel is expected to reach Wellington on January 25. Mr. G. Scales'fl chartered 6teamer Dalmore has arrived at Port Chalmers from Brisbane to commence loading for tho United Kinglom. Overhaul and survey were commenced on board the ooastal trader Opouri at Lyttelton on Monday morning, when- ■ she went into dock. The Union Company's Kanna is en route from Newcastle to Auckland, and tho same company's Wairuna is expected to clear the New South Wales coal port for Lyttelton to-morrow. The barque Hazel Craie. which arrived at Lyttelton from Hobart oH Sunday last, is expected to remain at the southern port for the next two weeks discharging her cargo of timber. When the Waihora.has finished discharging her cargo of Newcastle coal at Port Chalmers she will be placed in dock at that port for overhaul and survey. It will be remembered that last season, in response to requests, the Unioa Steam Ship Company dccided to run e direct service for fruit, etc., between Hobnrt and Brisbane, and placed the steamer Kooya in the trade. The support accorded the venture was not regarded as satisfactory (says the "Sydney Shipping List"), , and the vessel was withdrawn after mating a few trips. It is now announced that the company intends to repeat tho experiment during the coming fruit season, and. that it will be extended over a longer period than last year, with a view to seeing if the trade can be developed. Advice has been received in Wellinuton stating that the 0. and D. Line's steamer Star of Australia cleared London on. January 1 for Australian and Now Zealand ports. She is due at Wellington about March 8. The New Zealand trader Star of Scotland is reported to have arrived at London from New Zealand ports on January S. She clcared Wellington on November 21. Having completed loading a large quanr tity of dairy produce transhipments from coastal ports the Now Zealand- Shipping Company's chartered steamer Somerset left Wellington for Napier last evening. She will arrive back .here on January 20, and will he dispatched for London the following day. The Union collier Karori is expected to vacate the Wellington Patent Slip on Saturday. Tho Government 6teamer Tutanokai will bo the next vessel to occupy the cradle. Discharge of the Wellington portion of the Waitemata's San Francisco cargo is expected to be completed in time for her to leave for Melbourne and Sydney tomorrow. As the Mapourika has to undergo certain repairs at Wellington next week she will not leave here for Picton at midnight on Monday. The Pateena, which leaves Wellington for Nelson on . Monday evening, will make a call at Picton, both going and coming back. When the Union Company's Paloona arrives at Wellington from northern ports to-morrow she will land 207 tons of Auckland cargo before proceeding to southern ports. , The local agents for the Northern Steamship Company announce that tie Harawa, which leaves Onehiinga for New Plymouth on.Sunday next, will not leave the breakwater on the return trip till Tuesday evening. After having visited the various lighthouses in the north the Government steamer Hinemoa returned 'to Wellington yesterday morning. She will' Visit Cook Strait lights on Monday. Everything was in readings for the Awaroa. to leave Wellington for Melbourne yesterday wken the windlass carried away. Repairs are expected to be completed m time for the vessel to leave to-morrow. It is reported that the C. and D. liner Star of India (H.MJtf.Z.T. No. 8) has been fixed to leave New York for Australian ports, via Panama Canal, on February 13 Messrs. Bannatyne and Co. advise that the Defender will be dispatched from Wellington for Picton and Hokitika to-day. Due in port from Napier on Saturday the Shaw-Eavill liner Warwera will sail from Wellington for London next Wednesday.
