OUR MEN IN HOLLAND
HOW THEY ARE EMPLOYED. Commodore Wilfred Henderson, who is in command of the Brigade interned in Holland, has sent to Mr. J. Landfaer Lucas, of the Spectacle Makers' Company, the following letter, which that gentleman has been good enough _to send to an English paper for publication "Interneeringdepot, "Groningen (Holland), "Nov. 17, 1914.. "It was crushing bad luck being 'run out', so early in our innings, but we refuse to be 'down-hearted,' aiid away back in our minds we all cherish a firm conviction, although we cannot explain it, 'that the wheel of fortune will, take some turn which will release us before the war ends. We just must have our revenge for Antwerp. ' "Thank .you for the papers you have so kindly been sending. Thanks to the generous response to my appeal, we How have an excellently stocked library, and I am asking people not' -to send us any more literature except current illustrated papers and daily papers posted not later'than the day. after issue. I havg succeeded in arranging here'for a daily English edition of the local paper, so we get all the telegraphic war news served up hot every evening. "My greatest difficulty is providinguseful occupation for the men, and the best thing I have hit on is knitting warm garments. I have a department making warm garments which gives over fifty men occupation. If you feel inclined to help us a little, you could not do better than send us a-parcel of wool, .either khaki, brown, blue, or natural shade. "I have carpenters, 'tailors, barbers, and bootmakers' shops in full swing now, and this, week I hope to start a net-making' department, as we have many fishermen. Besides this I have a few sporadic departments making knick-knacks. One man is' inlaying pipes as mementoes, and I hear to-day that this enterprising individual has already got an establishment of six men working under him on piece-work. He has £6 worth of orders. I must keep the men employed or else thev will run to seed mentally and physically.
