HOW THREE FRENCH POSITIONS FELL
ECHO OP THE FIRST MONTHS (Rec. January 14, 0.10 a.m.) Paris, January 13. Escaped prisoners give accounts of the capture of Montmedy,' Charlemont, and Longwy early in the war. Big Austrian guns battered Fo r t Gharlemont to pieces, and the garrison surrendered on September 1. The Germans occupied Monmedy on August 29. The French had previouslydestroyed tlio defences, blew up the stores of ammunition, _ and also destroyed an important railway tunnel. The bombardment of Longwy began on August 21. The buildings were soon on fire, but the garrison resisted attack for six days and nights, and only surrendered when the -town was in rums.
